Alisson, Schmeichel and 10 iconic goalkeepers who scored goals

Alisson Becker became the first Liverpool goalkeeper to score for the club when he scored the incredible last-minute winner in a 2-1 victory over West Brom to keep the Reds' top four hopes alive.

The game was heading into the final minute of stoppage time with the score 1-1 with Liverpool having a corner. Alisson ran up the field and headed Trent Alexander-Arnold's shot into the goal beautifully – a glorious strike for any player, let alone a goalkeeper!

Arguably the greatest goalkeeper of the Premier League era, the Great Dane was a shot-stopper who characterised his bold Manchester United side with a love of going forward. He had cultivated this before he moved to Old Trafford, scoring six league goals for Hvidovre and twice for Brondby. 

His only goal for United came against Rotor Volgograd in the UEFA Cup and he became the first keeper to score a goal in the Premier League, albeit he was playing for Aston Villa by this stage of his career.

In total, he netted 10 times, including once for his national team, while son Kasper, who plays for Leicester, has shown himself to be a chip off the old block, having scored a brilliant diving header against Yeovil Town in 2014.

Paraguay international goalkeeper Jose Luis Chilavert is one of the most renowned goalkeepers in the history of the game for finding the net.

Over the course of his career, he scored 59 club goals, finding the target in Paraguay, Argentina, Spain, France and Uruguay. Additionally, he scored eight times in 74 outings of his national team.

He managed to find the target so regularly thanks to his acumen over set pieces, and he was a notable free-kick target especially for Velez Sarsfield, with whom he scored 48 goals over a 10-year career.

Perhaps the most remarkable match he played saw him net a first-half penalty against River Plate, only to concede one against Roberto Bonano – the opposing goalkeeper – in the second half.

Rogerio Ceni is undoubtedly the greatest goalkeeper of all time when it comes to finding the net. Over a career that tallied 22 years, he scored an astonishing total of 131 goals, having established himself as a centrepiece of Sao Paulo, with whom he spent the duration of his professional life.

When he first arrived in the team on a regular basis in 1997, his ability from a dead ball was already well know, but it could not have been predicted that he would go on to become quite so prolific.

Indeed, his figures stack up well against most midfield players, with the 2005 season a particular standout as he managed an astonishing 21 goals over the course of the year. 

There are few goalkeepers in world football versatile enough to be able to boast two positions, yet Mexico international Jorge Campos was one of those. Not only did he keep goal, he was a part-time striker and if his teams were struggling it was not unknown for him to spend the last portion of the match playing in an attacking role.

He mustered 28 goals for UNAM in 205 league appearances in his first spell at the club, then would net a further six in 43 outings from 1998-99.

The 130-time capped Mexico international, however, is perhaps best remembered for his fluorescent kits, which he designed himself, notably during World Cup 1994.

Former Baroka goalkeeper Oscarine Masuluke may only have scored one goal in his career, but such was the quality of the strike, it deserves mention on this list.

Playing in a Premier Soccer League match against Orlando Pirates on November 30, 2016, the goalkeeper had gone up for a last-minute corner as his side were trailing. What followed was a moment that was so outlandishly brilliant that it would be rejected by film writers everywhere for being too unrealistic. 

The ball spun high into the air, but Masuluke executed a brilliant overhead kick that saw it fly into the top corner of the net, thus salvaging a point for his side.

His effort was later nominated for the 2017 Puskas Award but finished second behind Olivier Giroud’s scorpion kick.

Egypt international goalkeeper Essam El Hadary hit the headlines in the summer when he was the oldest player at World Cup 2018 at the age of 45. Moreover, he became the most venerable player ever to feature in the tournament when he turned out against Saudi Arabia in his country’s final group match.

Earlier in his career, though, he was making a buzz for a very different reason. In the 2002 CAF Super Cup, his Al Ahly side were 2-1 up over Kaizer Chiefs when they were awarded a free kick close to the halfway line. 

A brilliant moment of quick thinking from the goalkeeper spotted opposite number Brian Baloyi off his line and launched an audacious shot that flew over his head and into the net. 

Scoring against a European giant like Juventus is quite an achievement for anyone, but to do it three times is genuinely impressive. And for a goalkeeper, it is unthinkable.

The former Bayer Leverkusen and Bayern Munich man, however, did just that over a career that saw him find the target 29 times in total from exactly 500 appearances, including four for Germany.

What is all the more special about his efforts against Juve is that they have come with three different clubs, having scored penalties against them for Hamburg and Leverkusen before netting a vital goal from 12 yards for Bayern in a group stage match in 2009.

He is the greatest scoring goalkeeper the Champions League has known.

No list of goal-scoring goalkeepers would be complete without Carlisle United hero Jimmy Glass, whose footballing career would have been entirely unremarkable but for a moment that has written him permanently into the game’s folklore.

On the final day of the 1998-99 season, Carlisle needed a win against Plymouth to stay in the Football League but were drawing 1-1 with just 10 seconds of the match to go.

In one last throw of the dice, the goalkeeper, who had played for the club only twice previously after being signed on a loan deal from Swindon, went forward for a late corner. Scott Dobie’s initial header was parried out and Glass was on hand to volley home, sparking a mass pitch invasion and securing Carlisle’s survival.

Vincent Enyeama, Nigeria’s most capped player of all time, is also a goalkeeper of some repute in front of goal, having struck over 20 goals over the course of his career.

Although best remembered for his spell at Lille in Ligue 1, it was with Hapoel Tel Aviv that he scored his most crucial goal, netting a penalty against Red Bull Salzburg in a Champions League qualifier back in 2010.

That was no flash in the pan, though. He scored nine league goals with the Israeli club, having found the target 10 times with Enyimba back in his homeland.

However, despite playing 103 times for the Super Eagles, he failed to tally.
