AC Milan/Inter & 10 football teams that share their stadiums around the world

The San Siro in Milan is arguably the most famous shared stadium. It is the home of AC Milan and Inter and has a capacity of 80,018, making it one of the biggest stadiums in both Italy and Europe.

The stadium was initially named after former Inter player Giuseppe Meazza in the San Siro district of Milan. The derby between the two Milan-based sides – dubbed the Derby della Madonnina – is one of the most passionate and prominent in European football.

Shared stadiums in Italy are plentiful compared to other European countries.

Lazio and Roma both call the Stadio Olympico in Rome their home, the 72,698-capacity venue also hosting events such as the Coppa Italia final, the 1990 World Cup final and several European Cup/ Champions League finals. The Stadio Olimpico opened its doors in 1937, and went under extensive renovation for Italia ’90.

Eredivisie side Ajax are housed at the Johan Cruyff Arena, which was previously named the Amsterdam ArenA until the end of the 2018-19 season to honour the iconic Dutch footballer.

Ajax have been at the Johan Cruyff Arena since 1996, with the venue also being used as the home of most of the Dutch national team’s matches. With a capacity of 54,990, it is the largest venue in the country, and has also hosted music concerts and other high-profile sporting events.

St. Andrews in Bordesley, England has been the home stadium of Birmingham since 1906, but the long-standing tenants have had to make do with sharing their ground – at least temporarily – with West Midlands neighbours Coventry City.

Due to an inability for the club to agree terms with the owners of former ground Ricoh Arena, Coventry had been made to agree a ground-sharing agreement with Birmingham City for the 2019-20 season, to the disappointment of their supporters. Coventry, for the record, is located at a 38-mile round trip from St. Andrew’s stadium.

The Stadio Marc'Antonio Bentegodi, which was christened after Marcantonio Bentegodi, the benefactor of Veronese sport, houses Italian sides Hellas Verona and Chievo.

Hellas Verona has traditionally been the more historically successful team out of the two, but the emergence of Chievo in the Italian top-flight in recent years has only made the rivalry between the two sides more intense.

The Stadio Luigi Ferraris in Genoa is one of the oldest stadiums in football, having opened its doors in 1911, and is the home of Italian sides Genoa and Sampdoria.

The stadium’s name is an honour to Luigi Ferraris, an Italian footballer and engineer who fought and died in World War II.

Located in Bruges, Belgium, the Jan Breydel Stadium is home to both Club Brugge and Cercle Brugge.  It was named after Jan Breydel, who led the Bruges Matins, a riotous rebellion against former King of France Philip the Fair (Philip IV).

Tottenham unveiled their brand-new state-of-the-art stadium in April 2019, the new ground replacing the Lilywhites’ former home of White Hart Lane at the same location.

The North London stadium won’t just be home to Tottenham, with the venue also used for NFL London Games. It is the first venue outside of North America to have been designed specifically for NFL games, with the Chicago Bears' clash against the Oakland Raiders in October 2019 the first NFL game that took place at the stadium, playing to a record crowd of 60,463.

Wembley is the dedicated home of the England men’s team, and also hosts the FA Cup semi-finals and final as well as the Championship play-offs.

It is the only other stadium in England that hosts the NFL London Games, with Tottenham Hotspur Stadium being the other.

Whereas clubs of the same sport (and association) sharing stadiums is commonplace in Italy, venues acting as permanent host to different clubs of the same sport is the norm in North America.

MLB side New York Yankees share a home with MLS team NYCFC in Yankee Stadium. Playing football in a square-shaped stadium designed for baseball might be unorthodox for some, but several American baseball stadiums serve as the venue for visiting European sides when they make their stateside tour. Yankee Stadium has played host to several ICC (International Champions' Cup), while the likes of Fenway Park are also popular grounds for football.

CenturyLink Field has been the home to the Seattle Sounders in 2009, and also doubles as the base for the NFL's Seattle Seahawks. CenturyLink Field hosted the MLS Cup in 2009 and will do so again for the 2019 MLS Cup, when the Seattle Sounders take on Toronto FC. 

Like Wembley and the Johan Cruyff Stadium, Stockholm’s Friends Arena – or Nationalarenan – plays host to both Allsvenskan football club AIK and the Sweden’s men’s team.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic did the honours of scoring the first goal at the stadium in November 2012, netting against England in the 4-2 victory. It also hosted the 2017 Europa League final between Ajax and Man Utd, with the Red Devils crowned champions.
