    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Freese needs no introduction. The star goalkeeper shined during the 2024 MLS season, finishing as one of the league’s best. His All-Star snub frustrated fans, but the 26-year-old didn’t dwell on it. Instead, he helped lead New York City FC to the Eastern Conference semifinals, earning praise from both supporters and critics.

His standout performances also earned him a first USMNT call-up in January, though he remained behind Matt Turner and Patrick Schulte in the pecking order. Back with NYCFC, Freese returned to action in a preseason clash against Sporting Kansas City.

WHAT LIES AHEAD FOR FREESE AND NEW YORK CITY FC?

New York City FC have been in preseason action since late January but have won just one of their three matches so far. However, they remain unbeaten, securing draws against Real Salt Lake and Sporting KC while defeating reigning MLS Cup champions LA Galaxy. The Eastern Conference side has three more friendlies left before opening the 2025 MLS season with an away match against Inter Miami on Feb. 23.
