The MLS playoffs are set! Seedings and matches confirmed for both the Eastern and Western Conferences ahead of the postseason

A 94th minute penalty kick, heartbreak at the death, players watching other matches dying seconds on a tablet together and controversial coaching decisions: MLS Decision Day had it all.

The New York Red Bulls clinched a playoff berth in the dying minutes of their Eastern Conference match against Nashville SC, sending Montreal players into disarray as they watched on from a small screen on their bench in Ohio after falling to the Columbus Crew.

Minnesota United benched their leading goalscorer in all competitions, Bongokuhle Hlongwane, and they lacked an attacking threat all night as they fell to Sporting Kansas City on a night where they were in must-win territory.

Meanwhile, 2022 World Cup winner Thiago Almada was controversially sent off with two yellow card offenses for Atlanta United and is set to miss their opening-round playoff match.

All this, and more, as five teams clinched a playoff spot on Saturday, with three being sent home in heartbreaking fashion.

The 2023 MLS playoffs have arrived, along with a new format, and GOAL has you covered when it comes to figuring out who ended up where and how they got there.

  • Tolkin Red Bulls 2022New York Red Bulls

Eastern Conference Wildcard: No. 8 New York Red Bulls - No. 9 Charlotte FC

In dramatic fashion, the Red Bulls clinched a playoff spot in the dying minutes of their Decision Day match against Nashville SC, with defender John Tolkin scoring from the penalty spot in the 94th minute of the match. The USMNT defender had ice in his veins, stepped up and found the back of the net. They'll host a Charlotte side, who just downed Lionel Messi and Inter Miami on their own turf, to secure a playoff spot themselves.

In this single-elimination match, the winner will advance to the Round One Best-of-three series against No. 1 overall FC Cincinnati.

The 2023 MLS Supporters' Shield winners will have home-field-advantage all throughout the playoffs for as long as they are alive. MVP frontrunner Luciano Acosta and USMNT striker Brandon Vazquez helped lead Pat Noonan's side to their first-ever trophy as an organization, and now, they're rewarded with the No. 1 overall seed.

  • Facundo Torres Orlando City 2022-23

Eastern Conference: No. 2 Orlando City - No. 7 Nashville SC

Orlando City had a dominant campaign, and it came on the back of breakout Rookie of the Year candidate Duncan MgGuire. The 22-year-old was selected in the first round of the 2023 MLS Superdraft and ended the regular season with 11 goals and three assists. On top of McGuire's performances, Orlando midfielder Facundo Torres - who is attracting attention from Europe - led them in scoring with 14 goals while playing 30 matches. They're a team to watch this postseason.

Nashville SC, meanwhile, clinched a playoff spot after a fantastic Leagues Cup campaign that saw them fall just short to Lionel Messi and Inter Miami in penalty kicks. Reigning league MVP Hany Mukhtar will look to help his side pull off the upset in round one of the playoffs after an underwhelming end to their regular season, headlined by a 1-0 defeat to the New York Red Bulls on the final day of the season.

  • Columbus Crew vs DC UnitedGetty

Eastern Conference: No. 3 Columbus Crew - No. 6 Atlanta United

The Crew and their talisman Cucho Henandez, who tallied 16 goals and seven assists in all competitions this season, earn the number three overall seed and hosting rights in the first round. Mid-summer additions Julian Gressel and Diego Rossi were key to their run, and now they're rewarded for their work.

Atlanta, meanwhile, come into the playoffs in an interesting predicament. In the final game of the regular season, their 2023 MLS MVP candidate and 2022 World Cup winner with Argentina, Thiago Almada, was sent off for two yellow card offenses. They'll be without their young star for the first game of the best-of-three series against the Crew, and it could prove costly.

  • Philadelphia Union Leagues Cup 2023@LeaguesCup

Eastern Conference: No. 4 Philadelphia Union - No. 5 New England Revolution

The two sides faced off on the final day of the regular season, with the Revs coming out on top, 2-1, on their home turf.

Reigning MLS Cup runners-up, the Union and Jim Curtin will look to make it back to the final and top the Eastern Conference this year. Star forwards Daniel Gazdag, Mikael Uhre and Julian Carranza will lead the way with one of the most frightening attacks in the league.

The Revs, meanwhile, are one of the most intriguing teams in the playoffs at the moment. They underwent a head coaching change with just over a month left in the regular season and entered Decision Day with three straight losses. However, an outstanding game against the Union saw them come out on top and now they have all the confidence in the world heading into the best-of-three series.

  • Lowen St Louis City SC

Western Conference: No. 1 St. Louis CITY SC - Winner of 8/9

The 2023 league debutants are the Western Conference regular season champions, and it comes after a brilliant first 3/4 of their campaign. The expansion side has struggled since the return from Leagues Cup, but their excellent spring and summer put them in pole position to host throughout the playoffs regardless of their form of late.

Goalkeeper Roman Burki, midfielder Eduard Lowen and striker Joao Klauss have been beyond brilliant all season, and now they're rewarded with the No. 1 seed.

  • Jordan Morris Seattle Sounders 2023Getty Images

Western Conference: No. 2 Seattle Sounders - No. 7 FC Dallas

FC Dallas, meanwhile, clinched a playoff spot on Decision Day courtesy of a 4-1 victory over the Los Angeles Galaxy. USMNT striker Jesus Ferreira and dynamic Argentine winger Alan Velasco will look to cause trouble in the opening round.

In their path will be a veteran Seattle Sounders team, who put together a comprehensive 2-0 win over the aforementioned St. Louis to end their regular season with the second seed.

  • Bouanga LAFC 2023Getty

Western Conference: No. 3 LAFC - No. 6 Vancouver Whitecaps

The reigning MLS Cup champions earn the No. 3 overall seed, and it comes after their star Designated Player, Denis Bouanga, won the MLS Golden Boot on Decision Day. Bouanga, a Gabon international, found the back of the net 20 times throughout the regular season. Even without 2022 MLS Cup hero Gareth Bale in their XI, LAFC look like a formidable side who could pull off a back-to-back.

The Whitecaps are an exciting team, especially with striker Brian White and attacking midfielder Ryan Gauld in their team. The Scottish midfielder could provide something special this postseason, while Canada international Richie Laryea could provide the dynamism from the left side of the pitch they need to take down LAFC.

The two sides battled it out on Decision Day to a 1-1 draw, with that match serving as an appetizer for the best-of-three contest.

  • Houston Dynamo celebrating U.S. Open Cup winGetty Images

Western Conference: No. 4 Houston Dynamo - No. 5 Real Salt Lake

Ben Olsen's crew took the fourth seed after a dominant Decision Day performance that saw them thrash the Portland Timbers, 3-1. One of the most inspiring teams over the final third of the campaign, the Dynamo could be the most surprising Western Conference team this postseason. With a 2023 U.S Open Cup title in hand, they have all the confidence in the world at the moment.

RSL, meanwhile, played a really tough match against the conference's bottom-feeders, the Colorado Rapids on Decision Day. Pablo Mastroeni's side beat the Colorado Rapids, 1-0, but were relatively unconvincing. With the Dynamo winning, though, there was nothing more they could do. They'll need to play their best soccer against a talented Dynamo side this postseason.

  • Alan Pulido Sporting Kansas City 2023@mediotiempo

Western Conference Wildcard game: No. 8 Sporting Kansas City No. 9 San Jose Earthquakes

Sporting clinched the No. 8 overall seed Saturday with a dominant 2-0 win against Minnesota United, who were also fighting for their postseason lives. Peter Vermes' side will host the Earthquakes, who also cinched Saturday, in a one-off Wildcard match where the winner will advance to the first round of the playoffs against the No. 1 overall seed St. Louis CITY SC.

The Quakes' drew their Decision Day match against Austin FC 1-1 to clinch the 9 seed.
