A former Arsenal star and an ex-England youth prospect - 10 midfielders Wrexham could sign this summer as Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney strengthen in the transfer market

Now the dust has settled on Wrexham's much-publicised return to the Football League, Phil Parkinson and his recruitment staff are on the lookout to strengthen the squad. Although the club are remaining coy publically - well, except for Ben Foster - it's clear that they will be targeting another promotion this coming season.

A series of strong transfer windows mean they already look in good shape to challenge at the top end of the table once again, however, the spending is not expected to stop this summer. The EFL's more stringent financial fair play rules should not present much of an issue either, thanks to the Robins' colossal commercial power.

One area of focus during the window will be midfield. The games will come thick and fast in League Two, meaning Parkinson will need to be able to rotate in this area of the pitch throughout the campaign.

These issues could even be exacerbated by the departure of Tom O'Connor. The Irishman is one of Wrexham's key players, providing the side with balance and bite in defensive midfield, and he has been heavily linked with several Championship clubs this season.

Even if he does not leave, we can expect to see at least one midfielder arrive at the SToK Racecourse before the summer is out. Below, GOAL takes a look at who that might be.

    Max Power

Wigan Athletic are once again a club in turmoil. Just a few years after the Latics were plunged into administration, HMRC has lodged a winding-up petition against the 2013 FA Cup winners.

A judgement on their case will be made in July, but the more pressing issue is that players and staff were rarely paid on time during the 2022-23 season. Despite a takeover by a local businessman being completed earlier this week, there remains plenty of uncertainty at the former Premier League club.

As a result, some of Wigan's players are likely to be on the move this summer. One of those is Max Power - a near-ever present for the Latics last season. The former Sunderland man is out of contract on June 30, though Wigan have offered him a new deal.

It would take a committed charm offensive to pull off the signing, but Power would instantly become the best midfielder in the division by some stretch.

    Louis Thompson

After breaking his leg, Louis Thompson missed a significant portion of Portsmouth's 2022-23 season, but there was still plenty of disappointed fans when he was released at the end of the campaign.

The 28 year old has amassed bags of Football League experience over the past decade after first breaking through at Swindon Town under Paolo Di Canio. Playing under the slightly-mad Italian clearly instilled a tireless work rate in Thompson and, provided he can prove his fitness, he should have no issue finding a third-tier club in the summer.

However, Wrexham could be an alluring choice too, especially as Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney are believed to be keen to recruit as many Welsh players as possible.

  • Ryan Broom Cheltenham 2022-23Getty Images

    Ryan Broom

Speaking of Welsh players, Ryan Broom is also entering free agency this summer. The Newport-born midfielder could end up being one of two former Cheltenham players that Wrexham sign this summer, with Alfie May been heavily linked with a move to the SToK Racecourse.

According to Gloucestershire Live, Broom has a deal agreed with another side - and it's not out of the question that that club is Wrexham.

A versatile midfielder, he largely spent the 2022-23 campaign pulling the strings in an advanced position but he is more than capable of slotting into a deeper role if required. And with no transfer fee to pay, he represents a good-value addition.

  • Dan Gosling Watford 2022-23Getty Images

    Dan Gosling

It was a slightly strange 2022-23 campaign for Dan Gosling. In March, Watford terminated his contract by mutual consent after he was ruled out for the season with an Achilles injury. He's been recuperating ever since and could yet be handed a new deal at Vicarage Road, provided he can show he's fully recovered.

If those negotiations do not bear fruit, Wrexham could step in and sign the former Premier League star. The 33-year-old has racked up close to 200 top-flight appearances across spells at Everton, Newcastle, Bournemouth and Watford, but could be seduced by the Wrexham project.

It's been reported that he has one eye on a coaching career when his playing days end, so the Robins could sweeten their offer by allowing him to share his on-field responsibilities with a role on Parkinson's staff. He'll be an expensive acquisition, though.

  • Sam Clucas Stoke City 2022-23Getty Images

    Sam Clucas

A Premier League starter in recent memory, Sam Clucas' move to Stoke City ended up being an underwhelming one, largely due to injuries. In his final campaign with the Potters he was restricted to just 12 appearances and it was little surprise to see him released at the end of the season.

Clucas might struggle to find a suitor in the Championship and with Wrexham able to pay League One wages, he is not out of their reach this summer.

The midfielder shouldn't have any issue shining in the fourth tier, but Parkinson - who has the final say on all transfers - will need proof that he will be a good fit for the dressing room before the club make their move.

  • Henri Lansbury Luton 2022-23Getty Images

    Henri Lansbury

Henri Lansbury has been an important cog in Luton Town's miraculous rise in recent seasons - a trajectory Wrexham will be looking to replicate. Unfortunately for him though, the 32 year old will not be part of the Hatters' Premier League adventure, with his release being confirmed recently.

Injuries have taken their toll as Lansbury has gotten older, but he still has the ability to be decisive when firing on all cylinders. A product of Arsenal's youth academy, he has carved out a mightily impressive career for himself, including 13 appearances in the top flight.

Entering into the tail end of his career, he may fancy finding a long-term home and Wrexham's history of handing out three-year deals might be enough to convince him to head up to north Wales this summer.

  • George Evans Millwall 2022-23Getty Images

    George Evans

After a couple of seasons playing second fiddle at Millwall, George Evans will be looking for his next club over the coming weeks after having his release confirmed. Capped by England at youth level, he progressed through the Manchester City ranks before heading out to Reading, then Derby, then to the Lions.

Capable of playing in defensive midfield, an important position in Wrexham's preferred tactical system, Evans can also slot into the backline.

His mix of technical ability, height and no-nonsense defending would make him a good fit for the back three Parkinson likes, meaning Wrexham would be killing two birds with one stone by signing him.

  • Liam O'Neil Cambridge 2022-23Getty Images

    Liam O'Neil

Free agent Liam O'Neil helped Cambridge United narrowly avoid League One relegation last season, making 21 appearances in all competition - the majority of which came as a substitute.

He'd been at The Abbey for six years before his release and was part of the 2020-21 promotion-winning side alongside free-scoring Wrexham striker Paul Mullin.

The fact he knows what is required to get out of League Two won't harm his chances of rocking up back alongside Mullin this season and neither will his versatility. Primarily a deep midfielder, he can also play on either side of the defence or as a wing-back.

  • Kyle Turner Partick 2022-23Getty Images

    Kyle Turner

Wrexham are understood to be looking to Scotland for some of their transfer targets, with St Mirren frontman Curtis Main among the players they have been linked with recently.

Along similar lines, Partick Thistle star Kyle Turner is worth their consideration too. After missing out on promotion in the Scottish Championship play-offs - Turner netted his shootout spot kick in the final - he may feel like it's time for a fresh challenge and a wage rise.

Turner has registered 11 assists in each of his past two club campaigns, as well as scoring at a decent rate for a midfielder. He's an outside, but exciting option for the Robins to think about over the transfer window.

  • Elliot Watt Salford 2022-23Getty Images

    Elliot Watt

It would take an almighty effort to get a deal done, but signing Elliot Watt would be a serious statement of intent by Wrexham ahead of the coming season. Watt's decision to reject the chance to stay at Bradford and sign for Salford was vindicated during the 2022-23 campaign.

The 23 year old managed a mightily impressive 15 assists in 44 appearances from centre-midfield, form that was unsurprisingly enough to earn him a place in the League Two team of the season.

Watt will be on a sizeable wage at Salford and still has a year to run on his contract. The Ammies owners are not short on cash too, but Watt could still be convince to sign for Wrexham this summer. The club may decide the deal does not make sense at this current moment in time, however.
