Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane wants to change history against Chippa United

Beating Cape Town City 2-1 in the Nedbank Cup on Sunday is one of the benefits of playing in the Caf Champions League, that is according to Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane.

‘Jingles’ said he had to end the Citizens’ dominance over his Tshwane side and credited their regular participation in the continental tournament for the win.

The Brazilians claimed a win over Benni McCarthy’s men in the Ke Yona quarter-final clash to bag their second win in all competitions against City this term.

Mosimane said playing in the continental club tournament has taught his troops how to manage their games when playing teams as good as City.

Although many predict a tough schedule for the 2016 African champions, who are now campaigning for three trophies in 2018 (Nedbank Cup, PSL and Champions League), Mosimane said they will put the lessons they have accumulate in the continent in as far as managing the schedule is concerned.

“Our people still have to understand continental football,” Mosimane said after the match.

“It’s totally different. The opponents don’t look too good on the ball or are as exciting as (Surprise) Ralani or (Ayanda) Patosi," continued the Kagiso-born coach.

“They just move slowly and manage the game, you will see when we play Wydad (Casablanca)," explained the coach.

“They don’t care about many things. They are just organised, get a draw away and they are happy.  The Champions League is a totally different game," reacted Mosimane.

“Back home we love exciting football, frills and all of that. It’s good for TV but sometimes you just have to manage the game, score the goals and take the win," the former Bafana Bafana coach.

“We won this match because of our experience,” said the former Jomo Cosmos player.

Speaking about their return to the league title chase, the coach remains wary of their visitors, Chippa United, whom they meet on Wednesday.

Sundowns are at the top of the log table with 43 points from 23 matches whilst Orlando Pirates occupy the second spot with 42 points having played a game more.

“Now it’s back to fire now,” Mosimane added ahead of the clash at Loftus Versfeld Stadium.

“It’s tough. We have a game in hand but games in hand don’t mean anything. Chippa always gives us problems,” he continued.

“But sometimes history can change. Like the history Cape Town City had over us (of beating us three times in a row). Now, it has changed,” concluded the 53-year-old mentor.
