Harambee Stars trio crowned Zambian champions

Kenyan trio, of Jesse Were, Anthony Akumu and David Owino were crowned the new champions of Zambian Super League with Zesco United after beating Mufulira Wanderers 4-2 on Saturday.

The Harambee Stars trio guided Zesco United back to the top podium on a dramatic final day of the Zambian Super League. The new champions needed to beat Mufulira Wanderers at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium lest Zanaco walked away with the trophy.

Zesco was leading the standings with a single point above Zanaco ahead of the penultimate final match and any slight fumble would have given the latter the title with a simple win against Forest Rangers at the Sunset Stadium.

But a well sharpened Zesco had worked out a clear plan; to kill the game early when Were's brace and John Chin'gandu solo strike in the first half gave the new champions a 3-2 advantage going into the break.

The former Tusker striker hit home his first goal in the 25th before completing his brace 13 minutes later to crown the season on a high. Chin’gandu gave Zesco the lead in the opening minute of the first half after collecting a cool pass from Lazarous Kambole.

Kombole, who was shown a yellow card in the second half, then crowned the day with a fourth goal to hand the Team Ya Ziko a first title since 2015.

Zesco United finished the league with 74 points after 38 rounds of matches.
