As well as the 23-year-old, Madrid are also continuing with their plans to sign Neymar from Paris Saint-Germain as they search for another global star after losing Cristiano Ronaldo.

The 25 year old is a big fan of London and has visited the English capital three or four times in the past 12 months. His contract with Paris Saint-Germain is until 2022, but there have been repeated rumours he could leave Ligue 1 before then.

Rangers are close to signing centre-back Gareth McAuley on a free transfer, Steven Gerrard has confirmed. The 38-year-old Northern Ireland international was released from West Brom in the close season after they were relegated from the Championship. Rangers have been working on a deal with McAuley since August and Gerrard expects to get it over the line soon. "There is no major rush, he’s been called up by Northern Ireland, so we won’t see him for a couple of weeks. That will be the last deal," Gerrard said after his side's 1-0 defeat to Celtic on Sunday.
