Man City player ratings vs Salford City: James McAtee has arrived! Academy starboy slams in hat-trick and Jeremy Doku impresses as Pep Guardiola's side destroy Class of 92-owned minnows in 8-0 hammering while Jack Grealish ends scoring drought

James McAtee showed Pep Guardiola just what he can do when given the chance as he bagged a hat-trick in a stunning 8-0 win for Manchester City over Salford City in the third round of the FA Cup. The youngster grew up in Salford but showed no mercy against his hometown club in what was a very one-sided affair against the club owned by Manchester United's Class of 92 legends. McAtee was helped by a thrilling display from Jeremy Doku, who scored twice and set up two more goals.

Jack Grealish also performed well a week after being given a telling off by Guardiola and scored his first City goal for 13 months, netting from the penalty spot. McAtee's fellow academy graduate Nico O'Reilly got on the scoresheet while striker Divin Mubama marked his debut for the club by scoring his first goal.

GOAL rates Manchester City's players from the Etihad Stadium...

  • Goalkeeper & Defence

    Ederson (6/10):

Only had to make one save, an easy gather from Kylian Kouassi's scuffed effort.

    Matheus Nunes (8/10):

An excellent display. Began the breakaway for Doku's goal, set up Mubama's strike and played a defence-splitting pass to spark McAtee's second.

    Jahmai Simpson-Pusey (5/10):

Needed to be more decisive in both boxes. Should have nodded in Ake's knockdown but made no contact and he missed a cross which almost led to a Salford goal.

    Nathan Ake (6/10):

Powerful and comfortable and rarely tested. Saw his header cleared off the line. Removed at half-time for Akanji.

    Midfield

    Ilkay Gundogan (6/10):

His lack of pace showed as he struggled to contain a counter and his passes were occasionally cut out.

    James McAtee (9/10):

Played an early bad pass to Mubama but then had a perfect second half, displaying flawless movement in the box. Scored his first goal at the Etihad Stadium just after the hour mark with a deft first-time finish, then coolly controlled a Foden pass to score his second before sliding in Grealish's pass to complete his hat-trick.

    Nico O'Reilly (7/10):

Played out-of-position but still did well, scoring his first goal for the club after excellent work down the left wing in tandem with Doku.

    Jack Grealish (7/10):

Gave Doku a perfectly-weighted lay-off then won and converted the penalty, scoring for the first time for City since netting against Crystal Palace in December 2023. Rounded off a strong display by teeing up McAtee's third goal.

    Attack

    Jeremy Doku (9/10):

Ruthlessly brilliant against opponents who played into his hands, scoring twice and setting up another two.

    Divin Mubama (7/10):

A strong debut for the club, scoring the second with a simple finish and working hard to create space for others.

    Savinho (7/10):

Another dominant performance down the wing and the latest sign that he has well and truly found his feet after joining in the summer.

    Subs & Manager

    Manuel Akanji (5/10):

An easy 45 minutes although he got complacent towards the end as Salford had several chances.

    Phil Foden (6/10):

Should have got in on the scoring act after getting 40 minutes but he did set up McAtee's second.

    Mateo Kovacic (5/10):

    Had a go from distance.

    Pep Guardiola (7/10):

Made seven changes and gave the kids a chance while still seeing his side storm to victory.
