Sam Nyamweya congratulates Harambee Stars for winning Cecafa

Sam Nyamweya has congratulated Harambee Stars for winning Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup on Sunday.

Kenya were forced to toil before downing Zanzibar 3-2 on post-match penalties in the final played at Machakos Stadium. Both teams had settled for a 2-2 draw after normal and added time.

The former FKF boss has saluted the team for winning the trophy after four years. “I take this opportunity to join Kenyans in congratulating Harambee Stars, following their record-breaking seventh Cecafa Senior Cup trophy – won on home soil for the second time in four years.

“The victory over Zanzibar Heroes was a demonstration of Kenya’s position in the region as a football powerhouse and testament to the fact that with a little more support, Kenya is a football giant in Africa.

“It is noteworthy that and, I do so with pride, that this is progressive achievement that is built on the foundation that we laid during my term in office and I am grateful that my successor – Nick Mwendwa, and his team have built on this very foundation and continue to reap the fruits of the work we started in 2011.”

Nyamweya singled out the heroics from goalkeeper Patrick Matasi, who saved three penalties in the presence of Deputy President William Ruto.

“Special tribute to Nick and FKF for staging a successful tournament and preparing the team so well against all odds at a time when the country was going through a bruising post-election period and hurting from the disappointment of missing out on the right to host the 2018 Chan.”

Nyamweya thanked President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy for rewarding the boys after the exploits. “I wish to thank President Uhuru Kenyatta, Ruto and all those that have come out to reward the boys for the excellent job and indeed pat FKF on the back for their organization.”
