Bayern Munich began the 2026/27 season with silverware, beating Borussia Dortmund 2-1 in the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup at Signal Iduna Park on Saturday. Goals from summer signing Nathaniel Brown and Michael Olise gave the Double winners a commanding half-time lead, and despite a second-half Dortmund revival that produced a Fabio Silva consolation, Bayern held on for their 13th Supercup title. Harry Kane called it "a great win to start the season," while captain Jonathan Tah acknowledged the team knows "it can still get better."

The result carried an asterisk, though. Jamal Musiala was absent after suffering absences caused by a neurological dysfunction in two pre-season matches, and his return date remains unclear. Kompany covered for the loss by deploying new signing Brown as a number ten, a position the 23-year-old had not played regularly before. The experiment worked well enough, though Kompany admitted it was partly forced by additional absences from Serge Gnabry and Lennart Karl. Joshua Kimmich was more candid after the final whistle, saying the team was "still far away" from where it needs to be in terms of quality and pressing efficiency.

Off the pitch, the squad is being trimmed. Joao Palhinha is closing in on a move to Benfica for around 14 million euros, a steep loss on the 50 million Bayern paid for him in 2024. Bryan Zaragoza is also edging toward a loan to Espanyol Barcelona, his fourth temporary departure during his time at the club. Sporting director Max Eberl has confirmed no further incomings are planned after the arrivals of Brown and Ismael Saibari. Bayern host VfB Stuttgart in their Bundesliga opener on Friday.
