Antony scored his second goal in as many games for Betis as he fired in an emphatic finish from range against Gent in the first leg of their Europa Conference League play-off on Thursday. That led a number of United fans to bemoan why he couldn't do that at Old Trafford over more than two years there, with one Red Devils supporter musing, "Are we the problem?".
Getty Images@Utd__Agenda posted on X: "You can’t help but laugh. This is Antony. Are we the problem? 🤣😂."
@petesunitedPOV tweeted: "Antony scored again tonight 👀 See what can happen when a player gets away from our reactive toxic fanbase and from media who hammer him for doing a spin 🤔 At some point we need to take responsibility for the insane amount of pressure put on our own players "
@UTDRoger_ put: "ANTONY SCORES HIS SECOND GOAL IN HIS THIRD GAME FOR BETIS. WHAT IS WRONG WITH US?"
@TheUtdArchive commented: "Antony suddenly being in form at his new club isn’t a coincidence. Some players don’t have the mentality to perform at United and he’s one of them. He had the chance to be good at Man Utd and he wasn’t, he’s found his level."
@markgoldbridge added: "Antony scores again....so what? He had two and a half years at United and was terrible. I'll never understand the hype behind players who go elsewhere and do well but consistently failed here. They only have themselves to blame. Fuck the blame culture. Look in the mirror."
Betis went on to win the game 3-0, making them strong favourites to reach the last 16 of the competition. Antony has scored more goals in three games for the Spanish team than he did in more than a year at United. While he is unlikely to ever live up to his mammoth £86m ($108m) fee, the Brazilian is showing he can succeed elsewhere.
