A 5-1 friendly win over regional rivals FSV Frankfurt on Wednesday provided an encouraging workout, and a trip to Premier League side Brentford on Saturday serves as the last major test before competitive football resumes.

The more pressing concern is what happens in the window before the Bundesliga kicks off on 29 August at Union Berlin. According to Bild, as reported by SPOX, Hütter wants two more signings, one in defence and one in attack, with the emphasis on experienced leaders who can add voice and authority to a squad described as too quiet. Bosnian international Ermedin Demirovic of VfB Stuttgart has been linked, but the 28-year-old has made clear he is not looking to leave, and Stuttgart's recruitment of Dzenan Pejcinovic suggests the door is firmly closed. Arnaud Kalimuendo, on loan from Nottingham Forest in the second half of last season, remains a target, though his fee would likely exceed 20 million euros. Several fringe forwards including Elye Wahi, Jessic Ngankam, Michy Batshuayi and Noel Futkeu are all expected to leave first.

Off the pitch, the Albert Riera chapter has taken another turn. The former coach, sacked at the end of last season after four wins from 14 games, appears set to join Red Star Belgrade, according to Serbian outlet Sportklub via SPOX. His acrimonious Instagram attack on club chief Axel Hellmann in July still lingers, but Frankfurt have moved on. With the Bundesliga campaign and a DFB-Pokal tie against St. Tönis on 21 August approaching fast, Hütter's focus is squarely on getting the right players through the door.
