Niko Kovac blickt auf eine lange Karriere als Profifußballer zurück. Ab 1991 war der Kroate im Profibereich aktiv, ehe er 2009 seine Laufbahn beendete.

Niko Kovac begann seine fußballerische Laufbahn in der Jugend von Rapide Wedding. 1989 wechselte der Kroate zu Hertha 03 Zehlendorf, ehe er zwei Jahre später bei Hertha BSC in der 2. Bundesliga anheuerte. Dort reifte er zum Profi und schloss sich 1996 Bayer Leverkusen an, für das er drei Jahre lang spielte.

Nach zwei Spielzeiten beim Hamburger SV (1999–2001) wechselte Kovac zum FC Bayern München, wo er bis 2003 aktiv war und insgesamt drei Titel gewann: 2001 den Weltpokal sowie 2003 das Double aus Deutscher Meisterschaft und DFB-Pokal.

Anschließend kehrte er zu Hertha BSC zurück – und damit zu seinem ersten Profiklub. Nach drei weiteren Saisons in Berlin wechselte er nach Österreich zu RB Salzburg, wo er 2009 seine aktive Karriere beendete.

 


Vier Titel hat Niko Kovac bislang in seiner Trainerkarriere gewonnen. Seinen ersten Titel holte er 2018: Damals sicherte sich der Kroate mit Eintracht Frankfurt den DFB-Pokal. 

Nach seinem Wechsel zum FC Bayern München gewann er in der Saison 2018/19 zunächst den Supercup. Unter Kovac als Cheftrainer konnten sich die Münchner zum Saisonende das Double aus Deutscher Meisterschaft und DFB-Pokal sichern. 

Sowohl als Trainer als auch als Spieler konnte Niko Kovac einige Erfolge feiern. Die Champions League hat er bislang jedoch noch nicht gewonnen.

Sechs Cheftrainerposten hat Niko Kovac in seiner Karriere bislang inne gehabt. Nach seiner Berufung als Trainer der kroatischen Nationalmannschaft war Kovac für Eintracht Frankfurt, den FC Bayern München, AS Monaco und den VfL Wolfsburg tätig. Aktuell ist der Kroate beim BVB als Trainer unter Vertrag.

Vor allem während seiner Zeit an der Seitenlinie des FC Bayern München, aber auch in der kroatischen Nationalmannschaft hat Kovac einige Stars trainiert. Unter Kovac liefen bei den Bayern Topspieler wie Arjen Roben, Franck Ribery, Thomas Müller, Manuel Neuer, Robert Lewandowski oder Mats Hummels auf.  Bei Kroatien trainierte Kovac zudem Stars wie Luka Modric oder Ivan Rakitic. 

Zahlen nennt er nicht. Bei Wolfsburg lag sein Jahresgehalt bei etwa 4 Millionen Euro, in Dortmund soll es laut Medien bei rund 3,5 Millionen liegen – brutto, versteht sich.

Er hat eine Tochter – ihr Name ist Laura. Weitere Kinder sind nicht bekannt.

Seit 1999 ist er verheiratet – mit seiner Jugendliebe aus Schulzeiten. Ihr Name ist in der Öffentlichkeit nicht präsent, die Beziehung gilt aber als beständig.

Niko Kovac wurde in seiner Karriere noch nie zum Welttrainer des Jahres gekürt. Bei der seit 2010 jährlich von der FIFA vergebenen Auszeichnung landete der Kroate bislang auch noch nicht unter den ersten drei.

Ein offizieller Spitzname ist nicht überliefert. Die Medien nennen ihn schlicht bei seinem Namen – Niko Kovac. Alles andere wäre auch unnötig gewesen.
