With the Red Devils chasing the game in extra-time against arch-rivals Liverpool, Ten Hag decided to get creative with his selection. While searching for a goal, he took to dropping midfield talisman Bruno Fernandes into a centre-half berth and asked Brazilian forward Antony to fill in at full-back.

The surprising tactical tweaks ultimately worked a treat, with United staging the most dramatic of comebacks to prevail 4-3 on the day. Amad Diallo netted a 121st-minute winner, after Marcus Rashford had levelled matters nine minutes earlier.

Antony had helped to send the tie beyond the 90-minute mark, as he snatched a late equaliser to make the contest 2-2. He would have been hoping to go on and become a hero in the final third, and was clearly less than impressed at being switched into a defensive role.

Rashford was among those to step in and calm Antony down, with questions being asked by the South American of what his manager was thinking. United were all smiles at the end, with a semi-final date with Coventry at Wembley Stadium now being locked in.
