    WHAT HAPPENED?

Kylian Mbappe put Real Madrid 1-0 up inside five minutes at the King Abdullah Stadium in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, but Barca hit back 17 minutes later through Yamal as he did his best impression of club legend Messi. The teenage forward raced onto a through ball from Robert Lewandowski before dribbling past two defenders and calmly sliding the ball past helpless Real goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, sparking wild scenes of celebration. Barca took full control of proceedings thereafter, with Lewandowski netting a penalty before goals from Raphinha and Alejandro Balde gave Hansi Flick's side a 4-1 half-time lead.

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Things got even worse for Real after the restart as Raphinha bagged his second to made it 5-1 and effectively end the game as a contest. There was more drama moments later, however, as Barcelona goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny was shown a red card for a cynical foul on Mbappe. That incident prompted Flick to take Yamal off for Dani Olmo in a bid to tighten up the Barca defence for the final 30 minutes of the game, which backfired as Rodrygo then scored Real's second of the night to give Carlo Ancelotti's side a glimmer of hope again. There were to be no more goals in the contest, though, as Barca held on for a memorable 5-2 win to clinch their first trophy of the season.
