'Sorry Madridistas' - Jude Bellingham breaks silence after Arsenal defeat with apology to Real Madrid fans - as England star admits players did not 'live up to expectations'

After a dismal first-leg showing in London, Madrid returned to the Santiago Bernabéu needing a miracle - but it never materialised, as they lost 2-1 on the night and 5-1 on aggregate.

Bellingham, one of the side’s brightest stars this season, failed to make his mark during either leg of the tie. While Vinicius Junior got on the scoresheet during Wednesday's home fixture, goals from Bukayo Saka, who also missed a penalty, and Gabriel Martinelli sealed the Gunners' victory and ended Madrid’s European hopes.

Following the loss, Bellingham took to social media to share a heartfelt message with Madrid fans. On Instagram, the England international expressed his disappointment and accepted that the squad did not rise to the occasion.

"Simply didn’t live up to the expectations of this club in either of the games," he wrote. "Sorry Madridistas, we understand how much these nights and this competition means to you. There’s still opportunities to save this season but it’s only possible by staying together. Real Madrid will be back!"

Despite the heavy loss, the night was still a significant one for Bellingham on a personal level. By stepping onto the pitch against Arsenal in the second leg, the 20-year-old reached a Champions League milestone, as he made his 47th appearance in Europe’s elite competition, matching the mark set by legendary goalkeeper Iker Casillas for players aged 21 and under.

With the European campaign now over, Real Madrid’s focus turns to La Liga. They return to action on Sunday with a critical home match against Athletic Club. Currently trailing Barcelona in the league table by four points, Madrid must now rally in the final stretch of the season if they are to defend their La Liga crown.
