Vincent Kompany has filled the gaps with eight academy players, giving youngsters like Bastian Assomo, who scored within minutes of coming on in the 15-0 friendly win over FC Rottach-Egern, a chance to impress. That result, comfortable as it was against ninth-tier opposition, still offered a clearer picture of the squad's pecking order. Joao Palhinha and Sacha Boey, both identified as surplus to requirements by sporting director Max Eberl, did little to change their situations. Palhinha looked disinterested for long stretches, while Boey barely influenced the game. Eberl has been direct: those two, along with Zaragoza, have no future at the club. The Boey situation is complicated further after Galatasaray's interest collapsed due to Turkish league foreign-player rules, and no concrete offers have arrived for any of the three.
