Bafana Bafana coach Broos confirms interest from Club Brugge - 'I know I'm a candidate there'

Broos proved his critics wrong by <a href="https://www.goal.com/en-za/lists/ronwen-williams-to-the-rescue-bafana-bafana-secure-afcon-2023-bronze-medal-after-win-over-dr-congo/bltac274c4ab2298ea9" target="_blank">guiding Bafana to a third-place finish in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations</a> held in Ivory Coast. En route to the bronze spot, South Africa eliminated Cape Verde and favourites Morocco before falling against Nigeria in the semi-finals. The team eventually beat Congo DR to end their campaign on a high.

WHAT HAPPENED?

<a href="https://www.goal.com/en-za/lists/broos-to-safa-i-want-to-stop-belgian-reveals-can-of-worms-that-made-him-shock-jordaan-despite-his-afcon-success-with-bafana/blt9feffe67e072d960" target="_blank">Broos had contemplated ditching the South Africa national team</a> after the biennial competition owing to poor treatment and working environment - as he alleged.Rumours from Europe indicated some top teams, including his former club, Brugge, were targeting the experienced 71-year-old tactician. Broos has now addressed the reports before once again showing his commitment to Bafana until his contract expires.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

"So first of all, about Brugge, I only know that I am a candidate there, and there is nothing more or nothing less than that," Broos opened up to the media. "So I know that in the Belgian media, they spoke about it. But again, there is nothing for the moment, nothing at all. I said already, after Afcon, if you do such performances with the team, then automatically there is interest in you as a coach, and I heard the rumours that Algeria were interested, that Tunisia were interested, and some other teams, also Brugge now," the former Cameroon tactician continued."But again, there are no negotiations, I didn’t see the people of Brugge, I know only that I’m on the list, I am one of the candidates. So let us see what happens in the future."I have a contract [with Bafana] until 2026. So if there is a moment that maybe I might leave or want to leave South Africa, then I still have to negotiate with the people of Safa. So for the moment, it’s just rumours and nothing more," he concluded.

WHAT BROOS SAID

<a href="https://www.goal.com/en-za/lists/predicting-bafana-bafana-s-xi-to-face-andorra-mayo-or-rayners-to-lead-south-africa-s-attack/bltfafa9d8414b5b706" target="_blank">Broos is in Algeria for two friendly matches</a> against Andorra and the hosts respectively in the next couple of days. The majority of the players are expected to be part of the Bafana team that will play Nigeria and Zimbabwe respectively in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers scheduled for June.
