Atlanta bounced back in style after dropping their season opener, pulling off an upset over the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday Night Football in Week 2.

Now, they’ll dive back into divisional play for the second time already this season, traveling to Carolina for a showdown with the Panthers. It’s been a rocky start for Bryce Young and company, as Carolina sits at 0-2 after stumbling against both the Cardinals and Jaguars to open the year.

Carolina Panthers team news

Quarterback Bryce Young put up big numbers in Carolina's 27-22 loss to the Cardinals, slinging the ball 55 times for 328 yards with three touchdowns and one pick. Even so, the Panthers’ attack has been sluggish out of the gates, averaging only 16 points per outing.

While consistency has been hard to come by, the Panthers have proven they can catch fire against Atlanta. In last year's Week 18 shootout, Young carved up the Falcons by completing 73.5% of his passes for 251 yards and three scores. On the ground, Chuba Hubbard leads the way with 95 rushing yards, while Young has chipped in 42 with his legs. Tetairoa McMillan has emerged as the go-to target, hauling in 11 catches for 168 yards, both team highs. Hubbard has also been productive as a receiver, snagging 8 passes for 71 yards and finding the end zone twice.

Defensively, Tre’von Moehrig tops the team with 20 tackles, 14 of them solo. D.J. Wonnum and rookie Princely Umanmielen share the team lead in sacks with one apiece, while Wonnum and Jaycee Horn have both recorded interceptions.

Atlanta Falcons team news

Michael Penix has connected on 40 of 63 attempts for 397 yards through two games while adding 20 yards on the ground. Bijan Robinson remains the heartbeat of the offense, rushing for 167 yards and also leading the team in receiving with 9 catches for 125 yards and a touchdown. Tyler Allgeier has chipped in another 100 rushing yards, while Drake London has pulled in 11 receptions for 104 yards.

Defensively, Billy Bowman has paced Atlanta with 10 tackles, including 4 solo stops. Zach Harrison is the sack leader with 1.5, while Xavier Watts and Bowman each have an interception to their name.

The Falcons, however, face a potential setback in the secondary. Cornerback A.J. Terrell Jr. exited last week's win in Minnesota with a hamstring injury and didn't return. His status for Sunday’s divisional clash with Carolina is up in the air. A former All-Pro and one of the most dependable players on Atlanta's defense since being drafted in 2020, Terrell's absence would leave a significant hole in the back end.

Veteran Dee Alford filled in for Terrell against the Vikings, logging 19 snaps without giving up a catch on two targets.

Panthers vs Falcons Fantasy Football

The Falcons kept things simple for Michael Penix on Sunday, and it showed in the box score. He wrapped up the week as QB31 (5.3 points), going 13-of-21 for 135 yards (6.4 Y/A) without a touchdown or turnover. Unless the Panthers can push the pace, Penix is best viewed as a matchup-dependent QB2 heading into Week 3.

Meanwhile, Bryce Young turned in the best statistical outing of his career last week, setting personal highs in completions (35), attempts (55), and passing yards (328), while tossing three touchdowns against one interception. His efficiency was modest at 6.0 yards per attempt, but sheer volume fueled his fantasy upside. Carolina’s line is banged up, with Robert Hunt and Austin Corbett both sidelined again. For context, both also missed that Week 18 thriller when Young exploded as the QB1 overall (36.4 fantasy points).

Atlanta’s defense, however, is no joke. In their 22-6 dismantling of Minnesota, they piled up six sacks, pressured J.J. McCarthy on over half his dropbacks, and forced four turnovers. Through two weeks, the Falcons sit atop the fantasy scoring charts for defenses. With Carolina surrendering the third-most fantasy points to opposing D/ST units so far, Atlanta’s rebuilt defense is a must-start option this weekend.

Panthers vs Falcons Game Predictions

According to the latest ESPN projections, Atlanta holds a 56.9% chance of victory, while Carolina is given a 42.8% shot, with the small remainder reserved for the possibility of a tie.

Atlanta’s defense showed on Sunday Night Football that it can be a legitimate difference-maker, a stark contrast to the struggles of the past five seasons. Carolina, meanwhile, has tightened up its run defense, but Bijan Robinson proved in the win over Minnesota that tough matchups hardly slow him down. Expect the Panthers to keep things close, yet the Falcons appear balanced and deep enough to seize games like this when opportunity knocks.
