'I'd love to have given them more fight' - Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson says over 7,000 Red Dragons fans at Blackburn deserved more from his side in 4-1 thrashing

Wrexham were thumped at Ewood Park in the fourth round of the FA Cup. Andy Cannon scored a brilliant opener for the League Two side but a brace from Sammie Szmodics and goals from Sam Gallagher and Sondre Tronstad gave Rovers a comfortable win. Gallagher's goal came after a dismal mistake from goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo, as he rushed out of his goal and was left stranded 30 yards out, allowing the striker to pass the ball into the back of the net, and Parkinson was disappointed with his side's display.

He told BBC Sport: "First 5-10 mins, we were a bit edgy, but then we got into the game, got the goal, had a great chance to go 2-0 up. Then they’ve scored a good goal to be fair, the second one, the ref's let them take the throw in from 15 yards from where it should have been.

"The third was disappointing from our point of view, and the fourth one kills the game Then we looked dispirited, it was a tough night for us. It's a great lesson for us. You've got to be switched on or you get punished. We've had some great nights but today wasn't the night for us.

"We'll regroup and concentrate on the league. It's an amazing spectacle, to have 7,000 supporters behind the goal. I'd love to have given them more fight. I thank them all for coming, especially on a Monday evening. An outstanding effort from all the people from Wrexham and we thank them."

Wrexham could have booked a fifth round clash with Newcastle, but that will instead be taken by Blackburn. Parkinson was banned from the touchline due to an accumulation of yellow cards, and watched on from the stands.

The club are currently second in League Two, five points behind leaders Stockport with a game in hand. They face Salford this weekend.
