'It's a new chance to become world champions' - Kylian Mbappe eyeing Real Madrid glory as Los Blancos prepare for Club World Cup campaign

After breaking the record for the most goals scored by a Real Madrid player in his debut season, bagging 43 goals in 56 games, Mbappe has firmly set his sights on the Club World Cup that begins next month. In a revamped version which will be played every four years, the Frenchman wants to achieve global glory and become a world champion with the Spanish giants.

Mbappe had a sensational debut for Madrid after his much-anticipated switch from PSG. Despite having a slow start and evident troubles adapting to life at the Santiago Bernabeu, the 26-year-old came into his own in the latter half of the campaign, finishing first in the La Liga Pichichi race and also claiming the European Golden Boot for scoring 31 league goals. However, it was a failure of a season collectively, as Madrid finished runners-up to Barcelona in the league, lost the Copa del Rey final, and were ousted from the Champions League in the quarter-finals by Arsenal. With the arrival of Xabi Alonso as their new head coach, Los Blancos are ushering in a new era, and Mbappe is determined to help the ex-Bayer Leverkusen manager begin his stint with Madrid on a high.

Speaking after winning the Real Madrid Player of the Season award, Mbappe shared his desire of lifting the Club World Cup with Madrid, a tournament which will see 32 teams from across the globe contest for the trophy. “It’s the first time we’re going to play in a competition like this. It’s something new for us, but we’re also looking forward to it because it’s a new opportunity to be world champions with the club,” he said (h/t Forbes).

"It’s a great competition, in the United States, with everyone watching and looking forward to it. As I say, it’s something new for us so we’re going to try to win it."

The Frenchman is currently on a short vacation, but he is expected to join the French national team next week ahead of their Nations League semi-final against Spain on June 5. He will then travel to the US with Madrid for the Club World Cup, with Alonso's troops scheduled to play their first group stage game, against Al-Hilal, on June 18.
