The England international is a talismanic presence for the Red Devils, with her creative talents being put to good use. Toone is expected to pull the strings for United, while also offering a goal threat when filling a No.10 playmaking post.

She showcased all of those qualities when lining up against Tottenham at Wembley Stadium with major silverware up for grabs. Spurs will have been aware of the need to keep a close eye on Toone, but were left chasing shadows just before half-time.

Toone drove forward in the third minute of first-half stoppage-time with there seemingly little on for her. She was, however, to jink between two opponents – leaving one sliding helplessly across the turf – before unleashing a stunning effort from just outside the penalty area that sailed into the back of the net.

United have endured a disappointing WSL campaign in 2023-24, finishing a long way behind the title-chasing pack, but have the opportunity to salvage something from the season in cup competition – giving Lionesses such as Toone and Mary Earps plenty to cheer.
