  • WHAT HAPPENED?

With Chelsea one goal to the good thanks to Maika Hamano's opener, Nilden floated a cross into the box that caught out stopper Hampton in the 21st minute. The England international tried to palm the ball to safety but it was adjudged to have gone over the line and the goal stood. The keeper and her team-mates vehemently protested the decision but with no VAR in the Women's Super League, the goal could not be overturned.

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

With Chelsea winning last season's WSL on goal difference ahead of Manchester City, the finest of margins can determine who wins the title. In the end, this didn't matter a great deal as the Blues went onto win the game 5-2. But calls may increase to get VAR into the WSL after incidents like this.
