Luton Town confirm Tom Lockyer discharged from hospital and recovering at home after suffering cardiac arrest against Bournemouth

Lockyer was taken to hospital after collapsing and going into cardiac arrest while playing for Luton against Bournemouth on Saturday in the Premier League. The club captain subsequently underwent treatment and further tests, but has now been allowed to return home after undergoing a procedure in hospital. Luton have offered an update on his condition and confirmed it was a "different" issue that caused Lockyer to collapse in the Championship play-off final back in May.

A club statement read: "We are thankful to report that our captain Tom Lockyer has now begun a period of rehabilitation from the comfort of his own home after he was discharged from hospital on Wednesday.

"This encouraging news follows a successful procedure that took place on Tuesday whereby Tom had an ICD (Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator) device fitted to prevent a repeat of Saturday’s incident."

The statement went on to add: "The clinical advice Tom and the Club has taken since the Championship play-off final has been conducted by the most renowned cardiologists, who have been involved at every step, along with a team of supporting multi-disciplinary consultants.

"We can now confirm that the tests taken this week had revealed that the issue Tom experienced on Saturday was different to the atrial fibrillation he suffered in May."

Luton also thanked Bournemouth's medical staff and Philip Billing for their actions in ensuring Lockyer was able to receive assistance quickly. The game was abandoned after the incident with the scores level at 1-1. However, the Premier League has since confirmed it will be replayed in its entirety later in the season.

Lockyer will continue his recovery at home and it's not yet known if he will be able to return to football. The Luton captain will of course be aware that Manchester United's Danish midfielder Christian Eriksen was also fitted with an ICD after a cardiac arrest at Euro 2020 and eventually able to get back on the pitch, but it's unclear what medical advice he will be given with regard to continuing his own career.
