'It's a goal!' - Thomas Frank has his say on Ivan Toney's alleged 'cheating' before scoring free-kick against Nottingham Forest as Nuno insists VAR should have intervened

Toney marked his return from an eight-month ban for breaking betting rules by scoring in a dramatic 3-2 win over Forest on Saturday night at Gtech Community Stadium. However, his goal arguably should not have stood as the striker moved the ball and the referee's spray so that he was in a better position to score from his free-kick - which he ended up doing. After the match, the opposing managers gave their respective views on the contentious moment.

On Toney moving the ball, Frank told Sky Sports: "To be fair I didn't see that, I don't know about it. I don't know what to say to that. It's a goal and it stands."

Unsurprisingly, Nuno took issue with the awarding of the goal and admitted he was surprised his players didn't complain about it.

The former Wolves boss said after the match, via Nottinghamshire Live: "It was ball displacement. The law is clear, every goal must be checked and every situation that leads to a goal must be checked. I don’t know whether they checked, but it is ball displacement. I was also surprised the players didn’t complain about it. I think we have to be a little bit more mature in that situation, because it changes the position of the wall and then it is a soft ball. Everyone in the stands thinks it is a mistake of the wall with its position, but it was a clear ball displacement - not only inches, it is a yard almost.”

Toney, who is reportedly wanted by Chelsea, Arsenal, and more, is back amongst the goals, more than 250 days since he scored his last goal for the club. The 27-year-old has been training behind the scenes for months now but the forward would have been forgiven if he was a bit rusty. Despite his time away from the game, the England international slotted back into Premier League football with apparent ease.

Premier League sides may still try and sign Toney before the end of the January transfer window but Brentford will reportedly want £100m for their star asset, even though his contract expires in 2025. Before the window shuts, the Bees play Tottenham on January 31, whereas Forest take on Bristol City in round four of the FA Cup on January 26, followed by Arsenal in the Premier League four days later.
