  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Ronald Koeman's side had to come from behind to beat Poland in their first game of the competition on Sunday. Adam Buska handed the Poles a surprise lead before Cody Gakpo levelled on the half-hour mark. Weghorst then grabbed the winner just minutes after arriving off the bench for the Dutch to ensure a winning start to the tournament.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Weghorst proved what a useful super-sub he could be at the Qatar World Cup, coming off the bench to score twice against Argentina and force extra-time. And it was no great surprise to see Weghorst at it again on Sunday against Poland with Netherlands lacking a killer instinct in front of goal. The Burnley man may not be the most glamorous striker in the game but there's no doubt he has the knack of scoring important goals, something that is very much appreciated by his team-mates as goalkeeper Bart Verburggen revealed after the game.

  • WHAT BART VERBRUGGEN SAID

He said: "We gave him a round of applause in the locker room. He was super important. I think it is a very good strength to have as a team, that the guys on the bench can make the difference. I am very happy for Wout, for us. On to the next."

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Weghorst, who scored with his very first touch of the game, is the fastest substitute to ever find the net for Netherlands at the Euros, scoring after just two minutes and 18 seconds of his arrival.

    WHAT NEXT FOR THE NETHERLANDS

Netherlands face a very tricky test against France next time out at Euro 2024. It remains to be seen if Weghorst will again be on the bench or if he's done enough to convince Koeman to give him a starting spot against Les Bleus.
