Premier League referees able to earn 'up to £250k a year' with extra duties as salaries for top-flight officials revealed

The salaries of top-flight referees have been revealed and show that leading match officials can earn a salary of up to £250,000 a year, according to The Times. Premier League refs receive a base salary of between £72,000 and £148,000 which is dependent on experience. However, referees can also earn extra in performance bonuses and match fees. The most junior referees can therefore earn a total salary of around £125,000, with the most experienced match officials earning double that amount.

The salaries have been revealed by chief refereeing officer Howard Webb in a meeting with the 72 EFL clubs. Yet referees can also earn even more by taking on opportunities with UEFA and FIFA. Premier League referee Michael Oliver officiated in the Saudi Pro League in 2023 and earned double his usual fee, taking home approximately £3,000 after taking charge of Al-Nassr's clash with Al-Hilal.

Premier League match officials earn double the amount of their Championship counterparts. The 18 Select Group Two Referees earn around £120,000.

Leading referees will be back in action this weekend in the FA Cup. Darren England will take charge of Fulham v Crystal Palace, Chris Kavanagh is the match official for Preston North End v Aston Villa, while Stuart Attwell is the man in the middle for Bournemouth v Manchester City and  Peter Bankes will officiate Brighton's tie with Nottingham Forest.
