Mary Earps, Vivianne Miedema, Lucy Bronze and the women’s football stars to keep an eye on in the summer transfer window

It’s almost time for the summer transfer window to open and the rumour mill is already in overdrive ahead of what promises to be an eventful few months in the women’s game.

There are already some key deals expected to go through early on, such as Ewa Pajor and Ellie Roebuck joining Barcelona, Spain star Alba Redondo making a switch to Real Madrid and all signs point to Mariona Caldentey joining Arsenal, too. Liga MX Femenil, the top-flight in Mexico, looks set to get in on the action as well, with Barca goalkeeper Sandra Panos one of several big players linked with a move there.

Meanwhile, stars such as Vivianne Miedema and Fran Kirby are set to join new clubs, names like Mary Earps and Lucy Bronze are out of contract and there is even speculation around Aitana Bonmati and Chloe Kelly, among others, as they enter the final year of their respective deals.

There is sure to be a lot going on then, as GOAL picks out the players with situations to keep an eye on...

    Vivianne Miedema

One of the most high-profile players set to be on the move this summer is Miedema, whose contract was not renewed by Arsenal at the end of the 2023-24 season. That resulted in plenty of questions being asked of the Gunners and head coach Jonas Eidevall, and it has also prompted plenty of interest across Europe in one of the most talented footballers in the game.

Manchester City appear to be leading the race to sign Miedema, who is still only 27 years old, but no decision has been made yet as other top clubs weigh up a move for the Dutchwoman.

  • Mary Earps Man Utd Women 2023-24Getty

    Mary Earps

There are a number of Manchester United players on this list, with Earps one of several out of contract. The England goalkeeper was the subject of heavy interest from Arsenal last summer, and though those rumours have since gone quiet, there has been little to suggest that she is close to agreeing a new deal with the Red Devils.

Where could she go if she does leave? It’s unclear right now, but it’s certainly interesting and one of the most intriguing transfer sagas there is going into this summer’s window.

  • Lucy Bronze Barcelona 2023-24Getty Images

    Lucy Bronze

Another particularly interesting contract situation is that of Bronze, with some reports suggesting she could leave Barcelona while others believe she will stay.

The England star has openly talked about how much she likes being at the club, but financial regulations mean she may need to take a pay cut in any new deal, with her current one expiring this summer. There are rumours of interest from England and the U.S. should she not be able to agree terms.

  • Fran Kirby Chelsea Women 2023-24Getty

    Fran Kirby

One Chelsea star given a memorable farewell in May was Kirby, who has left the club after nine trophy-laden years. There have not been too many rumours regarding potential destinations for the England star since, bar a report that said Arsenal had held brief talks with her, though a deal will not be done there.

This is definitely among the most interesting situations to keep an eye on in this summer transfer window.

  • Aitana Bonmati Barcelona 2023-24Getty Images

    Aitana Bonmati

This one can be filed in the ‘unlikely to happen’ category, but Bonmati is entering the final year of her contract in Barcelona and there is reportedly, and unsurprisingly, interest in her from elsewhere, most notably from Chelsea.

Barca are keen to tie her down to a new deal as soon as they can and the player loves the club, so it’s probably more a case of keeping an eye on updates of a contract renewal more than anything else.

  • Grace Clinton Spurs Women 2023-24Getty

    Grace Clinton

Tottenham have enjoyed having Clinton on loan from Manchester United so much this past year that they are determined to bring her back to the club on a permanent basis, with head coach Robert Vilahamn admitting as much towards the end of the 2023-24 campaign.

That will be difficult to achieve because the 21-year-old England international is very highly-rated at her parent club, but Spurs are keen to test the Red Devils’ resolve. We’ll have to wait and see how it plays out.

  • Daphne van Domselaar Aston Villa Women 2023-24Getty

    Daphne van Domselaar

It’s only 12 months since Van Domselaar was last on the move, joining Aston Villa from Twente. However, she could be set for another transfer this summer because Arsenal are keen to bring the 24-year-old to north London.

The Gunners held an interest in Earps for a long time, but that has since cooled and Van Domselaar has emerged as a new target. It could result in a swap of players as Sabrina D’Angelo, recently released by Arsenal, has been linked with Villa by BBC Sport. That said, the club from the capital won’t be getting their preferred deal done for free, as the same report says that Van Domselaar has a release clause of £200,000 ($254,000).

  • Chloe Kelly Man City 2023-24Getty Images

    Chloe Kelly

Another Lioness for this list, Kelly is heading into the final year of her Manchester City contract after talks of a renewal were put on hold until the end of the 2023-24 season, as the team were locked into a fierce Women’s Super League title race.

In recent months, there have been loose links with Paris Saint-Germain. Whether or not those are genuine, there are sure to be top clubs keeping tabs on Kelly’s situation if she does not agree new terms in Manchester.

  • Irene Guerrero Spain Women 2023Getty

    Irene Guerrero

Barca goalkeeper Panos is set to leave the club this summer to join Club America, Manchester United winger Lucia Garcia is reportedly going to sign for Monterrey and another Spain star who could land in Liga MX Femenil is Guerrero.

While Garcia has been a regular starter for the Red Devils over the past two seasons, Guerrero has hardly got a look in after signing for the club last summer, just weeks after she helped Spain win the World Cup.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, her time in England could be set to come to an end after just one year, with the former Atletico Madrid midfielder linked with Mexican giants Tigres by SDP Noticias. It's a move that would see Guerrero link up with fellow Spain star Jennifer Hermoso.

  • Beerensteyn JuventusGetty Images

    Lineth Beerensteyn

No player scored more goals than Beerensteyn in League A of the 2023-24 UEFA Women's Nations League and one of Europe's top clubs could be about to add her goal-scoring prowess to their armoury, the Dutchwoman having left Juventus at the end of the campaign.

Wolfsburg, the two-time European champions, have been most heavily-linked with the 27-year-old, who previously played in Germany with Bayern Munich.

  • Julia Grosso Juventus Women 2023-24Getty

    Julia Grosso

Another set to leave Juventus is Grosso, named the best midfielder in Serie A after the 2022-23 campaign. The Canada star won five trophies in two-and-a-half years in Italy and also has an Olympic gold medal to her name, all at 23 years of age.

Previously a target of Man City, Grosso had interest from Real Madrid this summer, but appears set to join a club in the NWSL instead, though the identity of that team remains unknown.

  • Nikita Parris Man Utd Women 2023-24Getty

    Nikita Parris

In different circumstances, Parris could already have left Manchester United by now. According to The Athletic, the forward was the subject of interest from the North Carolina Courage in the U.S. only a couple of months ago, but wanted to stay with the Red Devils to play in the FA Cup final, which they won.

Still, Parris is out of contract this summer and so the Courage could renew interest in her services, while others are sure to be keeping an eye on her situation after a rather impressive season in front of goal.

  • Katie Zelem Manchester United 2023-24Getty Images

    Katie Zelem

Yet another United star for the list, captain Zelem has been ever-present for the Red Devils since the women’s team was revived in 2018, but could she leave this summer? Again, she is out of contract and, again, there hasn’t been much either way to suggest what the future holds for her.

There have, however, been rumblings of interest from elsewhere in a player that has plenty of top-level experience, including from a season abroad with Juventus, and 12 England caps.

  • Ella Toone Manchester United FA Cup final 2024Getty

    Ella Toone

One better filed in the unlikely category is Toone, though it shouldn’t be ignored that the Daily Mail reported interest in her from Barcelona recently.

The England star only recently signed a new contract at Mancester United until 2026, and so would command a significant fee, but should the reigning European champions make further inquiries as to her availability, it would surely be a difficult opportunity for Toone to turn down.

  • Kika Portugal Women 2023Getty

    Kika

Champions League quarter-finalists Benfica could lose a few players this summer, with both Lucia Alves and Ana Seica on the radars of WSL clubs. Kika, their star forward, is also attracting interest.

The 21-year-old has long been rated as one of the top young talents in Europe and she has backed that up as Benfica’s standing on the continent has grown, shining in the UWCL on numerous occasions. As she enters the final year of her contract, Record reports that both Chelsea and Barcelona are eyeing up a potential move.

  • Katie Robinson Brighton Women 2023-24Getty

    Katie Robinson

Brighton have a few star names out of contract this summer, including Robinson, part of England’s 2023 Women’s World Cup squad. The 21-year-old has thrived for the Seagulls in the last two years, making it no surprise that they’ve offered her a new deal. However, she looks ready for a new challenge to take her game to the next level.

There have been rumblings of interest from abroad, but the main club linked with the young winger is Manchester United. That’s perhaps no surprise given, as this list has highlighted, they could lose a few forwards this summer.

  • Elisabeth Terland Brighton Women 2023-24Getty

    Elisabeth Terland

Another out of contract Brighton star who has been linked with United, Terland was absolutely outstanding for the Seagulls this past season. The Norway international netted 13 goals in 22 WSL games for a team that finished ninth in a division of 12 teams. Again, she has been offered a new deal, but it wouldn’t be a surprise to see her move on.

BBC Sport understands that the Red Devils have spoken to Terland, 22, though there is interest from elsewhere, too.

  • Rosa Kafaji Hacken Women 2024Getty

    Rosa Kafaji

With goals against Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain in Hacken’s run to the last eight, Kafaji was among the Champions League’s breakout stars last season. It won’t have gone unnoticed among the game’s top clubs that her contract expires at the end of 2024, either.

The 20-year-old has interest from English, Spanish and American clubs, according to Expressen, though Hacken are working to renew her current deal. If someone is able to snap up the young Swede, it might be to join them in January, but expect speculation to grow during this summer transfer window.

  • Laura Freigang Eintracht FrankfurtGetty Images

    Laura Freigang

Freigang is always linked with a move away from Eintracht Frankfurt. Barcelona, Chelsea, Bayern Munich, Arsenal, Lyon and Man City were among those said to be interested in the prolific forward last year, but she stayed. “I just think I'm really happy here,” she told GOAL. “The lifestyle of professional sports is to always look for something bigger, better, more. But I actually think it's something really great if you're really happy with something.”

This summer is no different. Again, speculation is rife around Freigang, whose contract expires next year. It’d be no surprise to see the 26-year-old renew that deal but, equally, no surprise if she chose to take on a new challenge.

  • Romee Leuchter Netherlands Women 2022Getty

    Romee Leuchter

Leuchter is out of contract at Ajax this summer and it appears that the 23-year-old is ready to take on a new challenge. She has been one of the most prolific scorers in the Eredivisie for the past three seasons, scoring 62 goals in 60 appearances for Ajax, and told ESPN earlier this season: “I would like to make a step, that's the intention.”

Liverpool have been linked with Leuchter in the past, with names such as Lyon and Chelsea also mentioned.

  • Mackenzie Arnold Australia WomenGetty Images

    Mackenzie Arnold

There are a lot of goalkeepers on the move this summer, with Roebuck joining Barca, Panos moving to Mexico and the likes of Earps, Van Domselaar and D’Angelo all mentioned above. There is even talk that Merle Frohms, one of the game’s best shot-stoppers, may leave Wolfsburg.

Arnold could be another to add to the conversation as she is out of contract at West Ham. The 30-year-old, who shone for Australia at last year’s World Cup, has been linked with Manchester United before and, if she does leave the Hammers, would be a fantastic signing for anyone who needs a new No.1.
