Johnson, currently serving as the operations director at the Manchester United Foundation, is expected to assume the role of head of women's football temporarily for six months, according to The Athletic. Johnson brings extensive experience to the table, as he has also served as the performance director for the girls' talent club.

Johnson's appointment comes at a crucial juncture for United as they navigate a transitional phase in their women's football setup. With the departure of the current head of women's football, Polly Bancroft, slated for the end of the campaign as she takes on the role of chief executive at League Two side Grimsby Town, United expect that Johnson's interim tenure will provide stability during this period of change.

Bancroft had played a pivotal role in overseeing the strategic direction, operations, and performance of both the women's first team and the academy. Her departure will necessitate a smooth transition of responsibilities to Johnson, ensuring continuity and effectiveness in the management of United's women's football affairs. Hence he will start working in his new role on May 1. Last summer also saw the departure of Skinner’s assistant, Martin Ho, who has assumed the head coach position at Norwegian side SK Brann Kvinner.

United are currently fifth in the league standings after their recent derby loss to Manchester City. They are set to return to action against Everton on Sunday in the Women's Super League.
