Kaizer Chiefs stars shine as South Africa draw 2-2 with Colombia in international friendly

Amajimbos, led by Kaizer Chiefs reserve coach Vela Khumalo, threw away a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 with the Colombia U17 team in an international friendly game staged at Francisco Rivera Escobar on Monday.The South Africans started the game well and were rewarded in the 33rd minute courtesy of Amakhosi's Steven Mendes. The advantage was doubled by Sivuziwe Lonzi 12 minutes after the break.However, strikes from Angel Mora (79) and Edmilson Herazo (90) respectively, ensured the spoils were shared.

WHAT HAPPENED?

"We had a very good first half and the boys must be proud of themselves; they ticked all the boxes in the tactical plan we had," the tactician said as quoted by Safa."They kept possession, scored the goals, and stuck to the philosophy we want to instil in them. We made substitutions in the second half because we wanted to give all the players a run, and unfortunately, that changed the shape of the game."We are happy with the boys’ performance and will be looking to put in an even better performance on Wednesday when we play Colombia again."

WHAT KHUMALO SAID

Amajimbos are using the friendly matches to prepare for the Cosafa competition that will be held later this year.The tournament will be used as the U17 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifiers meaning the team has to prepare adequately for the task.The Monday game had been scheduled for Sunday but was pushed forward owing to delays experienced in Brazil.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

The South Africans will have a day to prepare before playing again on Wednesday against Los Cafeteros juniors.It will be interesting to see how Amajimbos will encounter fatigue and deliver a positive outcome against their South American hosts.
