Caf launches investigation after Hawks raid Safa House amid theft and fraud allegations

Allegations of fraud and theft of R3 million have been levelled against Safa, prompting specialised crime investigation unit <a href="https://www.goal.com/en-za/lists/danny-jordaan-hawks-raid-safa-house-after-allegations-of-fraud-and-theft-amounting-to-r1-3-million-linked-to-president/blt11cfba08a2d5fbcb#csa62bd3fa04036a2f" target="_blank">Hawks to conduct a search and seizure at the association's headquarters</a>. But the Danny Jordaan-led local football governing body has denied any wrongdoing and <a href="https://www.goal.com/en-za/lists/safa-hits-back-at-the-hawks-for-shameful-raid-linked-to-r1-3-million-fraud-theft-allegations/blt6fc11c26f8b0f0d0#cs818edc0456f701c8" target="_blank">slammed the Hawks raid as a "shame."</a>The developments have caught the attention of Caf who have demanded a report from Safa as they are looking into the allegations.

WHAT HAPPENED?

"The Confederation Africaine de Football is concerned about the respect and image of football in South Africa, following the raid by the Hawks Serious Commercial Crime Investigation Unit on the South African Football Association headquarters," said Caf in a <a href="https://www.cafonline.com/inside-caf/news/caf-is-concerned-about-the-respect-and-image-of-football-in-south-africa-following-the-raid-by-hawks-serious-commercial-crime-investigation-unit-on-safa-headquarters/" target="_blank">statement</a>."Caf is looking into this matter based on and in accordance with the Caf and Fifa Statutes and Regulations and has requested Safa to provide Caf with a report, indicating that Safa and its President, Dr Danny Jordaan at no stage and under no circumstances, violated or breached the Caf and Fifa Statutes and Regulations."Whilst the allegations made by the Hawks Serious Commercial Crime Investigation Unit are serious, in line with international legal principles and jurisprudence, Safa and Dr Danny Jordaan are presumed to be innocent until an appropriate Judicial Body concludes otherwise."Caf has also requested Safa to provide it with any other information or facts which Safa and Dr Danny Jordaan would like to bring to the attention of Caf."

WHAT CAF SAID

The boardroom squabbles bedevilling Safa come at a time when the association appear to be doing things the right way in terms of national teams.Recently, Safa oversaw a flawless Africa Cup of Nations campaign by their flagship team Bafana Bafana who finished third at the tournament.The women's national team Banyana Banyana are the reigning African champions and were at the Fifa World Cup in 2023.

The local football governing body is busy preparing Bafana's upcoming trip to Algeria for international friendly matches against Andorra and the host country.They are also busy with Banyana Banyana's 2024 Olympic Games qualifiers against Nigeria as well as the national men's Under-20 assignment.
