The highly-decorated Portuguese tactician, who guided the Giallorossi to Europa Conference League glory in 2022 and the Europa League final last season, has been relieved of his duties at Stadio Olimpico after picking up just one win from the club’s last six Serie A outings.

His contract was due to expire at the end of the season, with Roma opting to act decisively at this point and welcome a new manager into the dugout well before the summer is reached. Club legend Daniele De Rossi has been handed the reins on a short-term basis through to June 2024.

Mourinho may be back in management by then, with the 60-year-old not one to stay out of work for long. His departure from the Italian capital has, however, hit hard – with a larger-than-life character struggling to hold back his emotions when driving out of Roma’s training centre for the final time.

There has been talk of Mourinho moving into international coaching at this stage of his glittering career, with the former Chelsea, Inter, Real Madrid, Manchester United and Tottenham boss having plenty to mull over as he considers his next move.
