Tottenham's Premier League title chances up in smoke? James Maddison set to miss extended period due to ankle injury

The England international, who joined Spurs from Leicester during the summer transfer window, has made a positive impact in north London. Maddison has starred in Ange Postecoglou’s attacking system, helping Tottenham to recover quickly from the departure of talismanic striker Harry Kane to Bayern Munich.

Maddison has registered three goals and five assists through 11 Premier League appearances this season, helping Spurs to position themselves among the frontrunners in the English top-flight. He is, however, set to be unavailable for the foreseeable future.

Speaking ahead of his side's Premier League clash with Wolves, Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou said: "Madders, a lot worse than we thought. He came off with the ankle injury, but the next day wasn’t great so we sent him off for a scan. So again not great for him and probably into the new year for him."

Earlier in the day, journalist Paul O'Keefe reported that Maddison could be out for as long as three months with the knock, which he sustained during an eventful 4-1 defeat to Chelsea. Micky van de Ven was also injured during that contest and is also facing an extended spell away from the action. To compound matters further, Richarlison is expected to be out for a month after undergoing surgery.

Spurs will be desperate to get Maddison back as soon as possible. If he were to be missing for a month, then he would return ahead of the busy festive period. If three months need to be sat out, then he would be unavailable until mid-February – which could see him miss up to 12 vital Premier League fixtures, including matches against Manchester City, Newcastle and Manchester United.
