Lazio swoop for Man Utd outcast Mason Greenwood as they steal a march on Serie A rivals Juventus to open talks over potential £30m transfer

According to theDaily Mail, the Serie A outfit has taken a decisive step to land the English forward as they have already initiated dialogues with United to take a march over other suitors. Their interest in Greenwood is not new. The Rome-based club had initially eyed the striker for a loan deal last season. However, Greenwood ended up spending the 2023-24 season on loan at Getafe. Despite the change in plans, Lazio continued to monitor his performance in Spain closely and their renewed interest has now led to serious negotiations with the Red Devils.

Serie A rivals Juventus and Napoli have also expressed interest in the 22-year-old forward. Additionally, clubs from Germany, Spain, and Portugal are reportedly keeping tabs on the situation. The competition is expected to heat up as these clubs formalise their interest in the coming weeks. Greenwood's current contract with Manchester United runs until 2025, with an option for the club to extend it by an additional 12 months. This contractual situation provides United with some leverage in the negotiations, ensuring they can secure a favourable deal as they reportedly seek at least£40 million ($51m) from the sale.

During his loan spell at Getafe, Greenwood managed to score 10 goals and provide six assists, showcasing his talent and potential to return to top form. His performance in La Liga earned him the Player of the Year honours at Getafe which has made him a more attractive prospect for several European clubs, who believe he can significantly bolster their attacking options.

Greenwood and his family have appreciated the relative anonymity and peace they found in Spain, away from the UK spotlight. This preference for a more private life could influence their decision to move to a club like Lazio, which offers a similar environment. Although there has been interest from other continents, especially from Saudi Arabia, the Greenwood family is reportedly keen on continuing their life in Europe, preferably in a setting that supports his professional and personal targets.
