Bayern Munich honorary president Uli Hoeness rushed to hospital after bursting vein and falling ill during charity golf event

The 73-year-old required urgent medical attention. He is now said to be "doing well", with Bild reporting that the former West Germany international was cleared to leave hospital on Saturday evening.

Hoeness was taken ill on the golf course at Miel Castle, which is situated around 270 miles from Munich. The charity event in question was hosted by Timotheus Hottges, the CEO of Telekom - a key sponsor of Bundesliga champions Bayern.

Hoeness is a club legend at Bayern having made 329 appearances for the club between 1970 and 1979. He helped them to three domestic titles during that time and a hat-trick of European Cup triumphs, while also winning the World Cup at international level in 1974.

Hoeness moved into an executive role with Bayern after retiring and spent 30 years as the club’s general manager before being elected as president in 2009. He stepped down after 10 years in that role, making way for Herbert Hainer, and now fills an honorary president post.

Bayern were in action as Hoeness mingled with sponsors elsewhere. Vincent Kompany’s side claimed a 2-1 friendly victory over Ligue 1 side Lyon at the Allianz Arena, with Michael Olise bagging a match-winning brace.
