Commentary

That's all from us, we hope you enjoyed that Derby della Madonnina! Until the next game, goodbye!
Three points to the blue-and-black half of Milan ensures they close the gap on Napoli's lead at the top of Serie A to just 13 points. It still looks an unassailable total to catch the leaders, but as things stand, Inter are better placed than any other side at the moment. Milan meanwhile, remain sixth, with an eight-point cushion ahead of seventh. However, if this poor run of form continues for much longer, the three sides within 10 points of the Rossoneri - Torino, Udinese and Bologna - could all catch up, to stake their own claims for European qualification.
Inter's dominance in this game was astounding at times, with their rivals Milan playing with anything but the tempo and passion of a local derby. The Nerazzurri outshot their rivals by 15 to four, preventing Milan from having a single attempt on target. They also maintained 64.2 per cent possession throughout the game, while their 343 first-half passes was almost double Milan's 126. Different class.
Derby day victory for Inter, but one that was eventually far too close for comfort! Inter remained thoroughly on top for almost the entire match, limiting their rivals to just a handful of half-attempts on goal. Lautaro Martinez's first-half winner was all it took for all three points, but he alone could have had a hat-trick, with Romelu Lukaku also going close. Ciprian Tatarusanu constantly saved Milan's blushes, and the Rossoneri looked like a shadow of a side who won the Scudetto last season. Work to be done for both sides, with Napoli still well clear of Inter, but for the time being at least, the local bragging rights will belong to those in black and blue.
90' + 6' FULL-TIME: INTER 1-0 MILAN.
90' + 5' SAVED!!! Lukaku loses out in a challenge with Thiaw, but Gosens wins the ball back and the Belgian gets up and curls a beauty towards the bottom corner, which is only just tipped around the far post by Tatarusanu!
K. Asllani
N. Barella
90' + 4' Inter's last change sees Barella withdrawn for Kristjan Asllani, and the Nerazzurri are just ticking down the moments now.
90' + 2' Milan look to create space in behind as Rebic and Diaz link up on the edge of the box, but the return ball to the latter is headed back into the gloves of Onana by Skriniar.
90' + 1' We're into five minutes of added time as Inter close in on their 68th win in the Derby della Madonnina.
90' + 1' VAR is checking that decision by the referee and his assistants, but soon concludes that the offside call was correct.
90' BALL IN THE NET!!! A long ball forward is flicked on well by the head of Lukaku, and Martinez shrugs off Thiaw to stab it home for Inter's second! He wheels away but the flag is up, as he came from an offside position to score and thus the goal will not count!
R. Gagliardini
H. Çalhanoğlu
89' Calhanoglu is the latest Nerazzurri midfielder withdrawn, and Roberto Gagliardini comes on to see out the game.
A. Rebić
Yellow Card
88' It's getting rather scrappy, as both teams contest for control of a seemingly ever-bouncing ball. Rebic and Barella is the latest clash, with the Milan substitute entering the contest too strongly for the referee's liking, leaving Barella in a heap on the deck and warranting a yellow card.
A. Rebić
S. Kjær
86' Kjaer comes off in Milan's latest change, and it's a striker on for the centre-back in the form of Ante Rebic.
85' Martinez backs heavily into Tatarusanu to prevent the goalkeeper from catching a high ball, and he's never going to get away with doing that without a foul being called.
O. Giroud
Yellow Card
84' Giroud chases a scooped forward ball from Tonali, throwing Acerbi to the floor on his way. Play is halted before he can get to the ball, and the French striker is shown a yellow card by the referee.
83' BALL IN THE NET!!! A cross from deep finds Lukaku, who wrestles himself away from Thiaw before slipping and scything the ball beyond Tatarusanu! The stadium rises, but the goal won't stand after Lukaku's tugging on the shirt of Thiaw is called as a foul by the referee!
82' Lukaku crosses into the area for Gosens, but Saelemaekers gets back and goal-side to scoop the ball clear and away. He injures himself in the process though, and play stops to allow the Belgian to get back to his feet.
81' BLOCKED!!! Lukaku does well to bring the ball down and keep it under pressure in the box, before assessing his options and lying it off to Brozovic. He arrives on the edge of the area and hammers a first-time shot towards goal, but it's deflected behind for a corner off Thiaw!
80' Barella chips over the top of the defence with Gosens chasing in behind, but he can't get to the ball before Kalulu hooks it clear.
78' WIDE!!! Tonali wins a free-kick right on the edge of Inter's box, and it's Giroud who steps up to strike this one. His curling effort beats the wall and looks to be heading in, before floating just past Onana's left post! Inter can't afford to get complacent here, being just 1-0 up is a very dangerous position to be in!
76' CHANCE!!! After Skriniar is caught with the ball high up the pitch, Milan break away at speed through Leao. He glides across challenges before passing to Giroud in the box, but the striker's first touch is abysmal and prevents any chance he had of getting a decent shot away!
75' SAVED!!! Onana is finally tested by a Rossoneri effort! Leao tees up Diaz on the edge of the box, who steps inside, then outside, before firing off a low shot which the Inter keeper gets down well to and holds!
73' Forward come Milan as Hernandez crosses from the byline, but the ball is cut out by Acerbi before reaching Leao and Inter clear their lines.
R. Gosens
F. Dimarco
71' Dimarco has impressed down that left-hand side, his replacement Robin Gosens will likely do more of the same as Inter look to put this game beyond doubt.
M. Brozović
H. Mkhitaryan
71' Mkhitaryan, who has been booked, also comes off, and Marcelo Brozovic will take up his role in central midfield.
R. Lukaku
E. Džeko
71' Inter also make changes, with the first of three seeing Romelu Lukaku replace Dzeko up top.
M. Thiaw
M. Gabbia
70' The booked Gabbia comes off next for Milan, as Malick Thiaw enters the fray.
69' It's Hernandez who strikes the free-kick for Milan, but he sends it high over the bar with only Milan's second attempt of the entire game!
F. Acerbi
Yellow Card
68' Tonali strides forward to the edge of the box, beating Barella on his way, but he's caught and taken down by Acerbi on the edge of the area, resulting in a second Inter booking in as many minutes.
H. Mkhitaryan
Yellow Card
67' After a mid-air tussle between Martinez and Kalulu sees the ball spin up into the air, and Mkhitaryan oddly brings it down using his hand, and is shown an immediate yellow card!
66' A poor pass back from Calhanoglu is cut out by Giroud, who tees Saelemaekers up to cross into the box. The substitute's attempt is dreadful though, and he hooks a high ball to the back post which is easily headed clear.
64' A rangy cross-field pass from Calhanoglu finds Dimarco steaming into the box, but the wing-back's touch doesn't allow him to control the ball properly and it rolls behind for a goal kick!
Rafael Leão
Yellow Card
62' Leao sets off on a run down the left edge, skipping past Barella in the process. The Inter midfielder hits the deck though, and replays show that Leao caught him in the face with his elbow. Leao is booked as Barella gets back to his feet.
61' Milan attempt to make a rare foray forward as Kalulu drives through midfield, but his central pass to Tonali is cut out by Martinez tracking back! He's been everywhere for the Nerazzurri!
59' CHANCE!!! Inter almost give their rivals a gift after Onana's poor, rushed clearance is flicked back forward by Giroud. Leao chases, but the Inter keeper leaps back into action and snatches the ball before anyone can get there!
57' A clever touch from Barella brings the ball down from Skriniar's clearance, taking it beyond Leao in the process. Leao drags Barella back and halts his momentum, warranting a free-kick from the referee.
55' SAVED!! Dzeko does well to keep the ball under pressure in the corner, and drills it square into the box. Martinez arrives to fire a first-time finish towards goal, bit Tatarusanu is equal to the effort and pushes it away!
A. Saelemaekers
D. Calabria
55' Calabria also comes off, with Alexis Saelemaekers replacing the Milan captain as Stefano Pioli looks to add some attacking impetus.
Rafael Leão
D. Origi
54' Milan roll the dice early and bring on Rafael Leao, who replaces Origi, who has also been a passenger in this game.
53' WIDE!! Good play from Inter sees Martinez control and flick Mkhitaryan's pass up and over his head for Dimarco to chase. The wing-back latches onto it, but snatches at a shot and sends an off-balance effort into the side netting!
51' After his 34th-minute opener, Martinez has now scored seven goals against Milan in all competitions; only against Cagliari (eight) has he scored more since he joined Inter. In the process, he became the second-highest foreign scorer in the history of this fixture for Inter, behind only Stefano Nyers (11).
M. Gabbia
Yellow Card
49' Gabbia flies in late on Martinez and catches the goalscorer from behind as he lays off a pass. Gabbia can have no excuses as he becomes the second Milan player to go into the book.
48' Milan did not attempt a single shot in the first half, with their main striking threat Giroud having just eight touches. His ninth was the kick-off to the second half!!
46' Giroud kicks off for Milan, and the second half is off and running at San Siro!
Brahim Díaz
Junior Messias
46' Messias, who like most of Milan's forward players was anonymous in that first half, comes off, with Brahim Diaz replacing him for the second period.
The teams return for the second half, and can Milan find anything within themselves, or from the bench, to try and get back into this game?
Lautaro Martinez has been the player to watch so far, something Milan are doing with increasingly difficulty. As well as scoring the only goal, he's managed four shots from five touches in the box, with two of these being on target. He's also completed two key passes, won four of his seven duels, and successfully won possession three times, via two tackles and an interception. Livewire.
The first half ends with Inter on top in every sense of the word - the only question is how they haven't scored more! Tatarusanu has been under pressure from the first whistle, with Martinez in particular carving out several good shooting opportunities. The Argentine did break the deadlock with a powerful header after 34 minutes, and has even had chances since to double that lead. Milan have offered nothing whatsoever, barely having a kick in Inter's half, and unless Stefano Pioli can pull off one hell of a rousing half-time speech, his side will continue to look well beaten already.
45' + 1' HALF-TIME: INTER 1-0 MILAN
45' + 1' We're into a solitary minute of added time at San Siro.
45' SAVED!!! Dimarco wins a corner off a deflection from Kalulu, and Calhanoglu fires another ferocious delivery into the box. It's again too close for comfort for Tatarusanu, who has to claw the ball out of the goalmouth directly from the corner, to prevent Inter scoring a second!
44' Calhanoglu looks for Dzeko in the box, but a poor first touch from the striker allows Krunic to hoof it clear for Milan.
42' Milan have been nothing short of woeful so far, being thoroughly second-best, and then some. Origi and Giroud have hardly touched the ball, while Inter's 74.8 per cent possession and nine shots to zero give an indication to how one-way the traffic has been at San Siro.
40' Kjaer and Calabria both commit fouls on Dimarco in as many passages of play, and tactical fouls far from their own box seems to be Milan's modus operandi at the moment.
38' Inter are fully in control of this one, and Darmian has all the time and space to whip a good cross into the box. Dzeko can't get there though, and Kalulu heads it away for the Rossoneri.
36' That's Martinez's 12th goal of the season, and the fourth time in which he's scored the first of the match!
H. Çalhanoğlu
Assist
34' Calhanoglu's corner was an absolute peach, and what a header to meet it from 'El Toro' Martinez!
Goal
34' GOOOOOAAALLLL!!!!! Inter taker a deserved lead!!! Calhanoglu's corner is curled towards the front post, and Martinez retreats from his marker's grasp to win the header and power the ball past Tatarusanu!!! A powerful header from a player who has looked lively all game, and it's 1-0 to the Nerazzurri!!
P. Kalulu
Yellow Card
32' As the Nerazzurri race forward, Martinez turns Kalulu with ease but is them dragged back and to the floor by the Milan defender. Inter win the free-kick, and Kalulu becomes the first player in this Milan derby to be shown a yellow card.
31' Milan make a rare break as Hernandez looks to run into space down the left, but he's barrelled over the sideline by Mkhitaryan and goes no further!
29' OVER!!! Barella wins Inter a free-kick, which is crossed in by Calhanoglu. It's a peach of a ball in too, which Martinez flicks on and heads just inches over the top of the crossbar!
27' Milan conceded 18 goals in January 2023, the most they have ever conceded in a single month of a year in their history in all competitions since 1929-30.
25' SAVED!!! Dimarco fires a thumper of a delivery into the box, and Tatarusanu, diving back into his goalmouth, has to stretch to parry the ball away!
24' Numbers queue up in the box as Dimarco whips a ball into the area, but Kjaer heads clear. The ball spins out to Barella, whose low effort into a crowded box is blocked by Gabbia and goes behind for a corner!
22' Inter have lost their last two home derbies against Milan in Serie A, as many defeats as they had in their previous 16 such games beforehand.
20' Acerbi clips a long ball towards Dzeko, but the big Bosnian is coming back from and offside position and is flagged accordingly.
18' Barella whips a teasing first-time ball into the penalty area, but Tatarusanu sees it all the way and catches with ease.
16' Milan have lost their last three matches in all competitions; last losing four games in a row between January and February 2017 under Vincenzo Montella.
14' Martinez looks to lay the ball off to Dzeko in the Milan box, but the striker goes down under pressure from Gabbia! The referee waves away any appeals for a penalty, and VAR doesn't intervene either, so it's play on!
13' Dimarco whips an Inter free-kick into the box from the right, but it's a poor ball which Origi is easily able to clear for Milan.
12' After their 3-2 victory in the reverse fixture, Milan could win both of their Serie A meetings against Inter in a season for the first time since the 2010-11 campaign under Max Allegri.
10' WIDE!!! Skriniar is given time and space to cross, and picks out Martinez in the box. The Inter striker attacks the header with intent, glancing a powerful effort inches wide of the right post!
8' Milan can't clear the ball properly and Calhanoglu goes for glory against his old club, but his 25-yard shot is always rising as it sails over the bar.
7' Inter's first corner, crossed in by Dimarco, is flicked behind off the head of Kjaer for another delivery, but Calhanoglu's from the other side sees the ball float straight into the arms of Tatarusanu.
6' SAVED!!! What a stop from Tatarusanu! A Calhanoglu pass is cleverly flicked into Martinez's path by Mkhitaryan, and the striker shoots early but his shot is parried wide thanks to great reflexes from the Milan goalkeeper!
5' Martinez clips a clever curved pass to the left flank, where Dimarco arrives on the edge of the box to hit it, but Tonali gets in the way and blocks his effort!
4' This is the 178th Serie A derby between Inter and Milan. Inter have won 67, and Milan 54 with 56 draws. Against no other side have the Rossoneri lost more top-flight matches, whilst Inter’s 56 draws with Milan are the most they’ve had against any side in the competition.
2' Bastoni's inside ball is dummied by Barella, and Martinez picks it up. From 20 yards, he tries his luck, and sends a fizzing effort high and wide of Tatarusanu's right-hand post!
1' Martinez and Dzeko kick off for Inter, and we are underway at San Siro!
The teams head out onto the pitch, and the stage is set for the 178th Derby della Madonnina!
The Rossoneri’s starting front two of Olivier Giroud and Divock Origi both scored in their 5-2 defeat to Sassuolo at this statement, and if Milan’s rearguard can hold Inter out at the other end, they might just be able to turn their poor run of form around here.
Inter’s top scorer this season, World Cup winner Lautaro Martinez, netted a brace in their 2-1 comeback victory over Cremonese last time out, and he’ll be hoping for further success against a Milan side who have shipped 15 goals in their last six games.
MILAN SUBS: Devis Vasquez, Antonio Mirante, Fode Ballo-Toure, Yacine Adli, Brahim Diaz, Ante Rebic, Tiemoue Bakayoko, Rafael Leao, Malick Thiaw, Tommaso Pobega, Aster Vranckx, Alexis Saelemaekers, Charles De Ketelaere.
MILAN (3-5-2): Ciprian Tatarusanu; Pierre Kalulu, Simon Kjaer, Matteo Gabbia; Davide Calabria, Junior Messias, Sandro Tonali, Rade Krunic, Theo Hernandez; Olivier Giroud, Divock Origi.
INTER SUBS: Samir Handanovic, Alex Cordaz, Denzel Dumfries, Roberto Gagliardini, Stefan de Vrij, Robin Gosens, Raoul Bellanova, Kristjan Asllani, Danilo D’Ambrosio, Valentin Carboni, Mattia Zanotti, Marcelo Brozovic, Romelu Lukaku.
INTER (3-5-2): Andre Onana; Milan Skriniar, Francesco Acerbi, Alessandro Bastoni; Matteo Darmian, Nicolo Barella, Hakan Calhanoglu, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Federico Dimarco; Edin Dzeko, Lautaro Martinez.
Milan are sixth in the table, and trail the ‘best of the rest’ behind Napoli. They’re on a wretched run of form at the moment, not winning any of their last four games and losing the last two 4-0 and 5-2 to Lazio and Sassuolo respectively, the latter coming at home. A Milan derby would be the perfect game to bounce back in though, and three points against Inter would see Milan climb to second in their place.
Second-placed Inter lead the five-strong pack of teams attempting to make up ground on runaway leaders Napoli, and currently sit 16 points behind Gil Azzurri with this their game in hand. The Nerazzuri’s form has been patchy so far this season, although they have won five of their last seven league games.
Hello, and welcome to live coverage of the Derby della Madonnina in Serie A, as city rivals Inter and Milan face off at San Siro.
