Commentary

That's all from us, we hope you enjoyed the game. Until the next one, goodbye!
It's a first loss under Gary O'Neil for Bournemouth, but the Cherries stay 11th thanks to no other corresponding results displacing them. Three places below them are Southampton, who climb from 18th to 14th with their first win in six, and are now just two points behind their South Coast rivals with a better goal difference. It's still such a tight table at both ends, and playing as they did in this game, both sides will know that they have enough quality to survive come season's end.
He may have ended up on the losing side, but Philip Billing was a constant threat in the Saints box, and went close to equalising on several occasions. In 83 minutes he managed two shots, four touches in the box, and completed 20 passes in the final third. He won eight of his game-high 15 duels, including three of four in the air, and won the ball four times from five attempted tackles, including once in Southampton's own third. Bullish.
It's all over, and Southampton have their first win in six games! It also comes with their first clean sheet of the season, and condemns Bournemouth to a first defeat under interim coach Gary O'Neil. The hosts piled on the pressure to equalise after Adams' early header, but couldn't create enough opportunities to really test Bazunu. Saints had a smattering of their own chances, but held on gallantly in defence to keep the Cherries at bay and lift themselves out of the bottom three!
90' + 6' FULL-TIME: BOURNEMOUTH 0-1 SOUTHAMPTON.
S. Armstrong
Yellow Card
Southampton
90' + 6' Stuart Armstrong tries to carry on playing despite a throw-in being signalled, and proceeds to scoop the ball into the stands behind the goal. He's yellow carded, understandably given the blatant time-wasting.
90' + 4' Moore's header in the box comes back to him, but his attempted volley is blocked and Saints come forward on the counter, in no rush to try a risky pass or potentially lose possession!
90' + 3' SAVED!!! Djenepo latches onto a flick from Adams, and bypasses Mepham before shooting, but his left-footed effort is held by Neto!
90' + 1' OFF THE LINE!!! Bazunu spills his catch of Tavernier's corner and Cook directs the loose ball goalwards, but it's volleyed off the line by Salisu!
90' + 1' We're into five minutes of added time, and can Bournemouth use it to find a late equaliser here?
90' OVER!!! Stanislas finds Tavernier down the right, and he steps beyond Larios before whipping in a cross, which needs to be tipped over by Bazunu for a late Bournemouth corner!
I. Diallo
A. Maitland-Niles
Southampton
88' Maitland-Niles is forced off with that cramp issue, and is replaced in midfield by Ibrahima Diallo.
M. Djenepo
A. Armstrong
Southampton
88' Adam Armstrong is also off, and Moussa Djenepo will replace him in attack for the Saints.
Juan Larios
R. Perraud
Southampton
88' Ralph Hassenhuttl throws caution to the wind and makes a triple change, the first of which sees Perraud come off for Juan Larios.
87' Dembele slaloms in between Ward-Prowse and Elyounoussi before heading towards the box, but runs into Lyanco and loses the ball!
85' Maitland-Niles is down for the Saints as the clock ticks over to signal just five minutes of normal time left, and can Southampton hang on to claim a first clean sheet, and third victory, of the season?
S. Dembélé
R. Fredericks
AFC Bournemouth
83' Fredericks is also off for the Cherries, who throw on another attacking option in Siriki Dembele.
K. Moore
P. Billing
AFC Bournemouth
83' Billing has arguably been Bournemouth's biggest danger in attack, but the towering Dane comes off now, for an equally towering Welshman in Kieffer Moore.
82' BLOCKED!!! What a goal-saving intervention!!! Stuart Armstrong puts Perraud in behind to cross, and he cuts the ball back to Adams, whose first-time shot strikes Smith and bounces over!!
81' Fredericks, under pressure from Perraud, crosses from the byline towards the back post, but Bazunu rises high to catch the ball off-balance and quash the chance!
79' CHANCE!!! Cook finds Stanislas in space inside the Saints box, and he floats the ball to the back post. Tavernier gets his head to it, but his goalbound header has little power on it, so Bazunu can save with ease!
78' Southampton have conceded at least once in each of their last 19 Premier League away games. Only once have they had a longer run without a clean sheet on the road in their top-flight history, going 21 games between September 1988 and September 1989.
J. Rothwell
M. Senesi
AFC Bournemouth
77' Senesi comes off in Bournemouth's latest change, and midfielder Joe Rothwell, signed from Blackburn in the summer, comes on for his Cherries debut.
77' Adam Armstrong sprints into open pasture with the ball and finds himself on the edge of the box. He lays it off for Ward-Prowse to shoot, but the captain drags his effort wide of the target!
75' On the break down the right, Adams beats Senesi brilliantly despite being off balance and crosses for Adam Armstrong, but it's cut out and scythed away for a corner by Mepham.
75' Stanislas' first-time cross deflects off Salisu before being put behind for a corner by Maitland-Niles, and the Bournemouth players all appeal for a handball against the Saints defender!
74' Solanke has been directly involved in five goals in eight league appearances this season (two goals, three assists), one more than he’d registered in his previous 32-game Premier League campaign in 2019-20.
72' Solanke does well to hold off Caleta-Car with his back to goal and turns before shooting, but sends his effort just over the crossbar!
70' BLOCKED!!! Fredericks crosses for Solanke, who lays off Billing, and his first-time effort is stopped from close range by Lyanco!
68' Tavernier breaks for Bournemouth and crosses into the area, but the ball goes behind both Solanke and Stanislas, and Fredericks' cross back in is met by a Solanke header which is cleared by Elyounoussi!
67' Stuart Armstrong bursts forward and links up with his namesake Adam. He finds Perraud, whose cross towards the front post is caught easily by Neto.
S. Armstrong
K. Walker-Peters
Southampton
66' Walker-Peters has pulled up on the far touchline and won't be risked further, so Stuart Armstrong will come on for the Saints.
Lyanco
J. Aribo
Southampton
64' Aribo comes off for Southampton, and it's a defensively-minded change by Ralph Hassenhuttl, as the Nigeria forward is replaced by Brazilian centre-back Lyanco.
J. Stanislas
R. Christie
AFC Bournemouth
62' Christie comes off in the game's first alteration, and Junior Stanislas comes on to continue his return from injury for Bournemouth.
61' The hosts break at speed and Tavernier races down the byline before crossing, but it's intercepted by Caleta-Car before it reaches Christie!
60' Adams and then Armstrong head a loose ball on for Elyounoussi, who cuts inside with the intention of shooting before Lerma dispossesses him!
58' Lerma finds Billing in the box, whose ball across the face of goal is deflected off Salisu for another Cherries corner.
57' Following a poor corner from Tavernier, Cook picks up the pieces and looks to find a Bournemouth shirt in the Saints box. His low cross from deep is too close to Bazunu though, and the goalkeeper gathers the ball with ease.
55' Christie races forward to meet Fredericks' long ball, but takes a heavy touch and the ball rolls behind for a goal kick.
54' Bournemouth have yet to lose under caretaker manager Gary O’Neil and if they avoid defeat in this match, they will equal their longest unbeaten run in the Premier League, which came in February 2018.
52' Solanke ghosts in behind Walker-Peters and cuts the ball back into the area, but it finds no-one in red and black, with Salisu intercepting.
50' Aribo gets around the outside of Fredericks and finds Perraud ahead of him, but the left-back's square ball to Armstrong is cut out by Christie.
48' Lerma looks to place a shot in the top corner from Christie's lay-off, but sends the ball floating over the bar.
47' WIDE!!!! Cook's corner lands right on the forehead of the unmarked Senesi, but the Argentine centre-back can only put his free header wide of the right post!
47' Tavernier drifts wide to collect a cross-field pass, and cuts the ball back to Billing in the box. He attempts another left-footed shot, but Maitland-Niles blocks it behind for corner!
46' The second half is off and running, via the boot of Solanke for the hosts!
The teams are back out for the second half, and will we see a turnaround on the scoreboard here?
Adams' early header is the difference between the sides at the moment, and the Scotland striker scored with his sole shot, chance, and touch in the box. He's also managed seven duels, three of which came in the air, and has also won two free-kicks for his side. Poach.
The first half ends, and the Saints have their noses in front thanks to Adams' early header! Following that ninth-minute opener, it's been an end-to-end affair, with both sides producing half-chances on the break, but being unable to really test either goalkeeper. Southampton surrendered a half-time lead in their last game, whilst Bournemouth have come from behind to win twice in their last five, suggesting that the second half will be interesting to say the least!
45' + 1' HALF-TIME: BOURNEMOUTH 0-1 SOUTHAMPTON.
45' We'll play an additional minute of stoppage time to close out a very entertaining first half.
A. Maitland-Niles
Yellow Card
Southampton
43' Maitland-Niles' reaction was arguably justified, but a tad extreme, and so he also picks up a yellow card for his involvement.
C. Mepham
Yellow Card
AFC Bournemouth
43' Mepham needlessly slides in on Maitland-Niles as the ball goes over the sideline, and there's a scuffle that follows, with the pair locked head-to-head until they are separated! Mepham is eventually booked for the challenge by the referee.
41' WIDE!!! Tavernier surges forward and steps Caleta-Car before shooting, but can only shank a fizzing effort wide of Bazunu's right-hand post!
39' Bournemouth have had fewer shots than any other side in the Premier League this season (71). However, their shot conversion rate of 14.1 per cent is currently their highest ever in a single top-flight campaign.
37' Cook steps up to hit the free-kick, and sends a curling shot over both the wall and the crossbar!
35' Bournemouth break again and Cook finds Tavernier on the edge of the box. He's taken down by Caleta-Car, and a free-kick is given right on the edge of the Southampton box!
34' Southampton are the only side without a clean sheet in the Premier League, and indeed the four professional divisions of English football, so far this season. Overall, they’ve conceded in their last 16 Premier League matches, last having a longer run between March 2005 and November 2012 (21 games).
32' Solanke looks to turn Maitland-Niles on halfway, but he's taken to ground by the on-loan Arsenal midfielder and wins the Cherries a free-kick.
30' SAVED!!! At the other end, Cook intercepts a poor Bazunu clearance and tees up Billing. He smashes a shot goalwards from 25 yards, and Bazunu makes up for his error by tipping it wide!
30' CHANCE!!! Walker-Peters skilfully escapes Tavernier and crosses into the six-yard box. Aribo slides in but can't connect properly, and Neto parries the ball away!
29' Maitland-Niles plays the ball in behind Senesi and Elyounoussi latches onto it. He looks to shoot, but it's blocked by a sliding Mepham!
27' Lerma latches onto the cross and heads the ball back across goal, but it's too close to Bazunu and the Saints goalkeeper smothers it.
27' Tavernier cuts inside from the left, but is caught between Elyounoussi and Maitland-Niles. The former is fouled as Bournemouth win a free-kick just inside the Saints' half.
25' Bournemouth have won just two of their 14 Premier League games on a Wednesday, with both of those victories coming against Chelsea (3-0 in 2018, 4-0 in 2019).
23' Armstrong sprints clear on the break for the leaders, and lays the ball off to Ward-Prowse, but his cross into the area is blocked by Tavernier!
21' Fredericks floats a cross into the box as the towering Billing jumps high for it, but Bazunu climbs higher and punches the ball clear!
20' Solanke skilfully brings down a cross-field pass, but can't find a teammate as the ball is cut out by Caleta-Car.
18' Bournemouth have lost just one of their five Premier League home games this season. They’ve kept three clean sheets at home so far, with three of their five goals conceded at the Vitality Stadium coming in that sole 3-0 defeat to Arsenal.
16' SAVED!!! Cook's cross into the box is headed clear, but Senesi heads back in and finds Billing. He turns and smashes a volley with his left foot, which is tipped over from close range by Bazunu!
R. Perraud
Yellow Card
Southampton
15' The hosts break and Christie releases Tavernier down the right. He races onto the ball put is dragged back by Perraud, who is booked by the referee for the foul!
13' Bournemouth's two wins under Gary O'Neil both came having gone behind in the game, so it remains to be seen if the Cherries can respond to that Adams goal with something similar at the other end!
11' Bournemouth have won just two of their 10 total Premier League games against Southampton, winning 2-0 at home in March 2016 and 3-1 away in September 2019.
R. Perraud
Assist
Southampton
9' What a ball from Perraud, and the Adams header it set up left Neto with absolutely no chance!
C. Adams
Goal
Southampton
9' GOOOOOAAAALLLLL!!!!! Southampton score first!!! Elyounoussi drifts across the edge of the box before passing wide to Perraud, who crosses back into the box. The unmarked Adams meets it with a superb glancing header, and the ball flies across Neto and into the far corner!!! That was some goal, and it's put the Saints 1-0 up at the Vitality!
8' After losing their first Premier League away game against Bournemouth 2-0 in March 2016, Southampton are unbeaten in their last four visits to the Vitality Stadium.
6' Ward-Prowse whips a typically accurate free-kick into the hosts' box, but no one can latch onto it and it skews wide of the far post.
5' Of the 12 clubs to have played at least 100 Premier League games against promoted sides, Southampton have the lowest win rate (43 per cent), winning 58 of their 134 meetings and losing 43.
3' Saints surge forward on the counter and Armstrong races into the box, but can't find any of his arriving options and has a shot blocked off Mepham!
2' Perraud's defensive header is brought down by Cook, who lays it off to Solanke on the edge of the box., He shoots, but can only drags his effort yards wide of the target.
1' Armstrong kicks off for the visitors, and this South Coast derby is underway!
The teams head out onto the pitch, and we're almost ready for kick-off here!
A dislocated shoulder for the impressive Armel Bella-Kotchap sees him ruled out, with Duje Caleta-Car coming in at centre-back for this game. He’ll play next to left-back Romain Perraud, who scored the opening goal in Southampton’s 1-1 draw with West Ham.
Philip Billing has scored three times during Bournemouth’s six-game unbeaten run, and he starts in an unchanged Cherries side for the third consecutive game. He’ll play in behind striker Dominic Solanke, who has also netted twice during this period.
SOUTHAMPTON SUBS: Alex McCarthy, Lyanco, Stuart Armstrong, Sekou Mara, Moussa Djenepo, Samuel Edozie, Ibrahima Diallo, Juan Larios, Theo Walcott.
SOUTHAMPTON (4-3-3): Gavin Bazunu; Kyle Walker-Peters, Duje Caleta-Car, Mohammed Salisu, Romain Perraud; James Ward-Prowse, Ainsley Maitland-Niles, Mohamed Elyounoussi; Joe Aribo, Che Adams, Adam Armstrong.
BOURNEMOUTH SUBS: Mark Travers, Joe Rothwell, Jack Stacey, Junior Stanislas, Siriki Dembele, Kieffer Moore, Ben Pearson, Jaidon Anthony, Jordan Zemura.
BOURNEMOUTH (4-2-3-1): Neto; Ryan Fredericks, Chris Mepham, Marcos Senesi, Adam Smith; Jefferson Lerma, Lewis Cook; Ryan Christie, Philip Billing, Marcus Tavernier; Dominic Solanke.
A 1-1 draw with West Ham last time out halted a four-game losing streak which the Saints had previously been on. That woeful run of form has seen the visitors slip into the bottom three, so they’ll be fired up to halt it, coming up against the league’s third-most porous defence.
Since a 9-0 thumping by Liverpool in late August, Bournemouth are the only team to have not lost a Premier League game, and have climbed up to 11th in the table. They’ve won two and drawn four in this six-game run, and will fancy their chances against a Southampton team sat in the relegation zone.
Hello, and welcome to live coverage of this fixture in the Premier League, as Bournemouth take on Southampton at the Vitality Stadium.
