After receiving a huge amount of criticism before the tournament and during Portugal's 1-1 Group K opener against DR Congo, Cristiano Ronaldo silenced the doubters as he bagged two goals in a 5-0 win over Uzbekistan. The legendary Al-Nassr forward was also on target in the controversial last-32 victory over Croatia, taking his World Cup tally to three.

Atalanta forward Charles De Ketelaere did not have the most fruitful of World Cup starts as Belgium. After failing to score against Egypt, he was left on the bench for the goalless draw with Iran. He drew blanks as they beat New Zealand and Senegal, too, before finally netting a double against USA and giving the Rode Duivels hope in the 2-1 loss to Spain.

Mexico talisman Raul Jimenez kicked off his World Cup with a goal in the 2-0 win over South Africa as the tournament co-hosts got off to a flying start. The Wolves striker added another to his tally in the last-32 triumph over Ecuador and despite scoring goal number three against England in the last-16, it wasn't enough to help his nation progress as they lost 3-2 to the Three Lions.

USMNT striker Folarin Balogun hit the ground running at the World Cup, scoring two goals in the Group D opener against Paraguay - a thumping 4-1 win for the tournament co-hosts. The Monaco striker followed that up with another strike in the 2-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina in the last 32 and but his tournament has now come to an end as he failed to find the net in the USMNT's 4-1 loss to Belgium.

Manchester United forward Matheus Cunha replaced Igor Thiago in Brazil's starting XI against Haiti, repaying Carlo Ancelotti's faith in him by delivering two goals - the second a thunderous drive into the top corner that left goalkeeper Johny Placide with no chance. The former Wolves attacker added another goal, after superb work from Bruno Guimaraes to tee him up, in the 3-0 win over Scotland but wasn't able to build on that in the knockout rounds as Brazil were dumped out by Norway.

As the lowest-ranked team in the tournament, New Zealand were always going to find the going tough. They bowed out at the group stage after picking up a solitary point through three fixtures.

Elijah Just helped to make that possible, as he bagged a brace in a 2-2 draw with Iran. He was also on target in a 5-1 defeat to Belgium - meaning that he registered three of the All Whites’ four goals.

Netherlands striker Brian Brobbey took over the No. 9 role at this World Cup and has repaid coach Ronald Koeman on two occasions. He grabbed his second in the last-gasp comeback win over Senegal in the last-32, before making it three, again appearing off the bench, as he struck the fourth goal in his country's 4-1 hammering of USMNT.

Freiburg midfielder Johan Manzambi produced a match-winning display from the bench as Switzerland beat Bosnia & Herzegovina 4-1 in their second group game. The contest was delicately poised at 0-0 before Manzambi's introduction, and the 20-year-old broke the deadlock in spectacular style with 74 minutes on the clock, rifling home a thunderous first-time volley. Bosnia were reduced to 10 men moments later and proceeded to capitulate, with Manzambi converting a cut-back for his second goal and Switzerland's third in the final minute of normal time.

Manzambi rounded off the group stage with a goal as Switzerland beat Qatar to finish above Canada and Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Deniz Undav boasts a remarkable strike rate for Germany, with his tally of international goals being nine through just 13 appearances. The Stuttgart forward filled a super-sub role at the 2026 World Cup, having stepped off the bench to find the target in Die Mannschaft’s 7-1 mauling of Curacao. He followed that effort up by bagging a match-winning brace against Ivory Coast although he now heads home after Germany suffered a shock exit to Paraguay in the last 32.

The Arsenal winger carried an injury into the 2026 World Cup, which ultimately limited his involvement. The Premier League title winner was often restricted to a substitute role. He did, however, burst into life when picking up a bronze medal in the third-place play-off.

The man who beat Cristiano Ronaldo and Ivan Toney to the Saudi Pro League Golden Boot last season took that form into the World Cup as Mexico aimed to go deep into the tournament on home soil. Julian Quinones found the net twice in the group stages, against South Africa and Czechia, as Mexico reached the knockout stage with maximum points. The Al-Qadsiah frontman was at it again in the round of 32 as his fearsome 22nd minute finish helped secure a 2-0 win over Ecuador, while he thumped home a volley in the 3-2 loss to England to finish the tournament with four goals to his name.

Ismaila Sarr was Senegal's bright spark as they suffered a 3-2 loss to Norway, striking twice to keep his side in with a chance. Senegal then made easy work of Iraq, with Sarr netting the second of five goals in the impressive win that took them to the knockout stages. He then put his side fully in the drivers' seat against Belgium with a fine strike to make it 2-0 early in the second period, although a late collapse by the African nation saw them exit the tournament at the last-32 stage.

Mikel Oyarzabal scored twice in Spain's 4-0 group stage rout of Saudi Arabia, and repeated the trick in a 3-0 victory over Austria in the last 32. The Real Sociedad man opened the scoring for La Roja and also bagged their third in that game, producing two superb first-time finishes after being teed up by Marc Cucurella.

Spain went on to reach the final, seeing off pre-tournament favourites France 2-0 in the last four, and Oyarzabal grabbed the all important first goal from the penalty spot.

After kick-starting the tournament with a double against Croatia, Harry Kane overtook Gary Lineker to become his country’s all-time leading marksman at the World Cup finals with a header against Panama. If that wasn't enough, he added two more to his record with a vital double as the Three Lions fought back from a goal down to beat DR Congo in the round of 32.

Kane held his nerve as chaos raged around him in England's last-16 showdown with Mexico, as he fired home from the penalty spot to help the Three Lions to a battling 3-2 victory at the Azteca Stadium.

After netting his side's third goal in the 3-0 win against Iraq, the Ballon d'Or winner struck three times as they closed the group stage with an emphatic win against Norway. Ousmane Dembele's blistering first-half hat-trick thrust him right into the top end of the scorer's list. He added a fifth to his name with the vital goal that sealed a 2-0 win against Morocco in the quarter-finals.

The Paris Saint-Germain forward missed a couple of chances in France's third-place play-off against England, but also found the back of the net with a left-footed finish that fizzed into the bottom corner. Dembele broke into the Golden Boot top five courtesy of the two assists that he posted.

Erling Haaland marked his first-ever World Cup appearance in style, scoring twice in Norway's impressive 4-1 rout of Iraq. The Manchester City terminator slid home the opener at the far post before doubling his account when capitalising on a terrible mistake from the Iraq goalkeeper, helping Norway claim all three points in their first World Cup outing in 28 years.

Norway were made to work harder on matchday two against Senegal, but two more goals from Haaland, including a side-foot volley that went in off the bar, helped them get over the line in a thrilling 3-2 victory. Their superstar No.9 was at it again when facing Ivory Coast in the last-32 as he bundled home a dramatic 86th-minute winner.

After missing a penalty in the early stages of Argentina's second game against Austria, he fired in a lovely strike to move clear of Klose before making it 18 in total in injury time. The South American GOAT stepped off the bench to score a cheeky free-kick in a 3-1 win over Jordan and then made it seven for the tournament as he smashed home against Cape Verde in the last 32.

His eighth goal of a record-shattering tournament was recorded in a thrilling last-16 showdown with Egypt, with Messi pulling Argentina level - from two down and having missed a penalty earlier in the game - before Enzo Fernandez snatched a dramatic winner. He registered his second assist of the tournament during a dramatic extra-time victory over Switzerland in the quarter-finals, with two more assists against England in the semi-finals seeing him briefly climb above Mbappe in the standings.

Kylian Mbappe brought up his 13th and 14th World Cup goals as France battled to a 3-1 win against Senegal in their Group I opener. The Real Madrid star also made history with his superb long-range strike to settle the contest in stoppage time, overtaking Olivier Giroud as France's all-time record goalscorer.

France then breezed past Iraq 3-0 in their second group outing, and Mbappe added another two goals to his haul as the 2018 winners qualified for the round of 32. Mbappe proved to be the match-winner for France in their last-16 showdown with Paraguay, with a calmly-converted penalty settling that contest. He then gave his side the lead against Morocco, sending them on to the semi-finals, but his journey ended there as France suffered a chastening 2-0 defeat to Spain.

Mbappe did, however, still have the third-place play-off to come, and bagged a brace in a thrilling contest with England to take him into double figures on the goal front and ahead of Messi on the all-time scoring chart - as he reached 22 efforts in total. The 27-year-old has become the first man to win two World Cup Golden Boots.
