Ryan Reynolds and Wrexham’s popularity hits surprisingly low as 'Cinderella story loses its shine' despite third successive promotion

According to research from BetVictor Casino Canada, 27 per cent of X posts concerning Wrexham and co-owner Ryan Reynolds were negative in April 2025 - the largest proportion of negative comments in a single month this year. Their findings add that in May, 19 per cent of posts about the club and the Hollywood actor have been negative, while just 12 per cent have been positive. BetVictor states there has been a huge negative swing since the start of 2025, when just eight per cent of all posts were negative.

In a season where the Welsh club have earned promotion to the Championship, Wrexham’s popularity has taken a serious dip. Our research on social media platform ‘X’ has found that last month 27% of all posts concerning Reynolds and Wrexham were negative – the highest proportion so far in 2025. They don’t appear to be winning many fans back this month either as just 12% of all posts have been positive, while 19% have been negative – the second-highest proportion of negative posts so far this year. Is the Cinderella story losing its shine? If the tide of social media sentiment is turning, Reynolds and McElhenney are unlikely to be too concerned, now just one step from the Premier League!”

While the negative reaction on social media to Reynolds and Wrexham appears to be on the rise, the Welsh side have gone from the National League to the Championship in three short years. Reynolds and fellow co-owner McElhenney have done wonders for the Red Dragons and are seen as heroes in Wrexham. Now, they are just one division away from achieving their goal of reaching the Premier League, which is a remarkable achievement.

Aside from critical views on social media, Wrexham are now preparing for life in the Championship after securing promotion from League One last month.
