Confectionary rained down from the stands at both ends and onto the pitch, causing the referee to hold off on kick-off at the BayArena. There were even candy eyes and small balls thrown onto the field as security scrambled to clear everything so that the game could go ahead.

The atmosphere in Leverkusen's stadium was boisterous for many reasons. Fans were fired up for the crucial tie between the two Bundesliga title challengers. Meanwhile, protests have swept the Bundesliga this week as fans threw tennis balls and chocolate coins onto pitches, causing big delays in clashes elsewhere in the country. Furthermore, there was some joviality around the place as the game is being played during Karneval - a colourful celebration that takes place across some parts of the country this time of year.

The headline showdown may have huge implications on the Bundesliga title race. Hosts Leverkusen sit two points ahead of Bayern at the top of the table heading into the tie, which kicked off almost 10 minutes later than scheduled because of the disruption.

Both teams are eager to get the three points to boost their hopes of securing the Bundesliga crown this season. It has been 13 years since Leverkusen finished as runners-up but they remain unbeaten after 20 games this season under coach Xabi Alonso.
