Manchester United fans could have been forgiven for thinking that the tide in the city was finally turning their way again. They won more points through to the end of the season than any other team in the Premier League after Michael Carrick's appointment as interim manager in mid-January, with the first three collected in a fully-deserved 2-0 derby win over Manchester City at Old Trafford.
Carrick's side ended up finishing just seven points behind second-placed City in the table, and watched on in hopeful excitement as Pep Guardiola confirmed the end of his trophy laden, 10-year reign at the Etihad Stadium. United have never finished above their neighbours in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era, but there was reason to be confident of that changing in 2026-27, especially after a summer that saw City also wave goodbye to a host of beloved players, including Rodri, Bernardo Silva and John Stones.
Now, though, just four games into the new season, there is a familiar feeling to Manchester once more. The city is still unquestionably blue.
