Gary Neville, the former Manchester United and England defender, has warned Florian Wirtz, the Liverpool playmaker, that he must improve his level, following a modest start to his spell with the club, followed by an ineffective display in the opening-day draw against Newcastle.
The German international has the talent to succeed in the Premier League, Neville admits. But he wasn't happy to see Wirtz hauled off after an hour on Sunday.
Speaking on his podcast, Neville said: "He needs to sort himself out. Enough is enough now, we have talked about him enough. He is a young lad, he has come to a different country, and I always want to support and encourage him."
He added: "I can see a real player there, but I cannot keep watching this level. He was substituted after an hour, his team needed a goal, they were behind 2-1, and that is not right."
"I do not see the determination in Wirtz specifically," he continued. "I see a good player who moves around the pitch, but he never looks like he is giving his all to do anything."
His frustration comes from a place of belief. "I want to push him hard, because he has the ability and the talent, and he has an understanding of his position," Neville explained.
On where Wirtz should focus, the pundit went on: "I feel that Wirtz should have thought more about being less involved in building the attacks, and about being a second striker rather than the third midfielder, and about his output and what he has to do."
Alexander Isak escaped no lighter. The Swedish international failed to leave his mark on his first return to St James' Park.
"The big thing for Liverpool is that it has an attacking duo that cost a quarter of a billion pounds, Isak and Wirtz, and my goodness, we have been very kind to these two players," Neville continued.
He went on: "They will have to start performing sooner or later, otherwise, in all honesty, they will face a lot of criticism. I think they will have to start delivering their levels."
He concluded: "Both of them have been given some leeway. Isak was obviously injured last season, but Arne Slot is losing his job, and Wirtz played like that, so let us be clear, that has made me start focusing on them for real now."
