<p><strong>General procedure</strong></p><p>The 32 teams that have qualified for the World Cup are divided into four pots of eight teams.</p><p>Teams are drawn from each pot and allocated into eight groups.</p><p>Pot 1 is emptied first, followed by Pot 2, then Pot 3 and finally Pot 4.</p><p>The procedure will see a ball drawn from the team pot and then allocated one of eight groups, from A to H.</p><p><strong>Draw constraints </strong></p><ol><li>A number of constraints are observed in the draw. They are: </li><li>As hosts, Qatar are represented by a different colour ball and are allocated to the position A1. The remaining seven top seeds are then drawn as the primary teams in groups B to H. </li><li>FIFA's general principle is to have only one team from each qualification zone in a single group. This means that Brazil cannot be paired with Ecuador, for example. However, the principle does not apply to UEFA teams. </li><li>Each group must have at least one, but not more than two UEFA teams. <p>Usually all the teams have been confirmed by the time of the World cup draw but things were different this year.</p><p>Following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Scotland's European play-off against Ukraine last month was postponed.</p><p>It is hoped the game can be played in June though that has yet to be confirmed. When it is played the winner will then play Wales for the right to join England, USMNT and Iran in World Cup Group B.</p><p>The other two intercontinental finals were postponed for Covid-19 reasons and have been scheduled for 13 and 14 June in Qatar.</p><p>Costa Rica play New Zealand in one and in the other Peru face the winner of the United Arab Emirates v Australia, who meet in the Asian play-off in Doha on 7 June.</p>

<p>And what about Mexico?</p><p>El Tri exico are World Cup tournament regulars but will be looking to create a piece of national team history at Qatar 2022.</p><p>Their only previous appearances in the quarter-finals came when they hosted the tournament in 1970 and 1986, and they are yet to get beyond the last-16 stage in a World Cup on overseas soil.</p><p>So can they go all the way? Third time lucky for USMNT?

<p>Here is more from England boss Gareth Southgate speaking to <a href="https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport" target="_blank">BBC Sport </a>about the draw:</p><p>"When you’re seeded then you get the advantage of missing out on those big six or seven teams. So for most of the first seeds they would be pleased with the group they get.</p><p>"There are some highly ranked teams in pot two and the USA are an interesting one.</p><p>"I know Gregg Berhalter quite well. We have met a few times and had a long chat about things, in fact the last time was just a few weeks ago.</p><p>"They’ve got some very good players and we know what they could be capable of as a nation, so that one inparticular is an intriguing game."</p>

<p>England manager Gareth Southgate has been giving his reaction to the draw.</p><p>He told <a href="https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport" target="_blank">BBC Sport: </a>“The first two (teams) we have not played for a while. The third is a total unknown but throws up a possible British derby, so we know what they are all about. We’ve had plenty of them.</p><p>"We are in on day one so it is quite clear know what our programme looks like with the end of the Premier League season and getting out here as quickly as possible.</p><p>"The first objective is to get out of the group, regardless of the opposition, and go from there."</p><p>On whether not knowing their third opponent hampers preparation: "I think in this situation all our thoughts are with the people of Ukraine. So when the tie is played it is irrelevant really, it is for the rest of us to adapt and provide them the opportunity to play as and when they are able to."</p>

<p><strong>HOW IT WORKS</strong></p><ul><li>Teams are to be drawn into eight groups of four.</li><li>As hosts, Qatar automatically go into Group A as the first team.</li><li>Teams from Pot 1 are drawn first, then Pot 2, then Pot 3 and, lastly, Pot 4.</li></ul><p><strong>ARE THERE ANY CONSTRAINTS?</strong></p><ul><li>With the exeption of UEFA, teams from the same federation cannot be drawn together. So the USMNT (Pot 2) and Canada (Pot 4) cannot be in the same group.</li><li>Each group will have at least one UEFA team, but not more than two. Five out of the eight groups will have two UEFA teams.</li><li>Three placeholders for the remaining qualifiers will populate Pot 4. These placeholders are for the final UEFA qualifier and the two intercontinental play-off winners.</li></ul>

<p>"I'm going to Qatar, but as a fan," said the recently retired Argentina legend. "I have a great relationship with everyone from the national team but I don't see myself in the coaching staff and with the players on a day-to-day basis. They are asking for a role that isn't for me right now. </p><p>"I had a talk with [Lionel Messi], he and [Lionel] Scaloni gave me an idea of what they wanted from me.
