Johan Derksen has been hugely impressed by Ruben van Bommel, he says in Greetings from Grolloo. According to De Snor, it is only a matter of time before the PSV winger is in the Netherlands squad.
"A very positive point is Ruben van Bommel," Derksen begins. "He was signed by PSV, suffered a serious injury, was out of the picture for a year. But he is now making his comeback and I found him so impressive against FC Groningen."
Van Bommel tore his cruciate ligament in September 2025 during a match against Ajax, but returned for PSV in pre-season. He is now once again certain of his starting place in the Eindhoven side's attack, and underlined that with an excellent display against Groningen (5-1) last Sunday.
"He really is a talented player. He is stronger, faster than he was. He immediately showed his credentials as a Netherlands candidate," Derksen is convinced. The first squad selection from newly appointed national coach Xavi is not far away.
The first matches of the new era of the Netherlands national team are already scheduled for late September and early October. In the Nations League, the Netherlands take on Germany, Serbia (twice) and Greece. The matches against Germany and Greece then come around again in mid-November.
For Derksen, Van Bommel should be involved by then. Although Cody Gakpo is a formidable rival ahead of him on the left flank, the analyst believes Van Bommel would fit perfectly well in the Netherlands squad.
His strong display also earned Van Bommel a place in the VZ Team of the Week.
