The Germany international defender has faced criticism this season, but he claims to be enjoying his football and has learned to ignore his detractors

Shkodran Mustafi admits to having endured an inconsistent season at Arsenal, but insists he has no plans to push for a move elsewhere.

The Germany international, who is in his second season at Emirates Stadium, has faced criticism at times for his reading of the game.

Costly mistakes have been highlighted in high-profile clashes such as a Carabao Cup final date with Manchester City and Premier League meetings with Newcastle and Southampton.

Mustafi has seen transfer talk sparked as a result, having previously been linked with Serie A side Inter in the summer of 2017, but he claims to be settled in north London.

The World Cup-winning defender told Kicker: “My season has been a bit like Arsenal’s - peaks and troughs. Recently I’ve been performing [well].

“I’m thankful to play for a club like this. I want to play where I’m happy and I am happy here. Especially as I almost always start when I’m fit.”

Mustafi also says that he has learned to turn a deaf ear to those quick to criticise him, with the 26-year-old fully aware of when he has allowed his high standards to dip.

He added: “I don’t pay much attention to it as long as it’s not necessary.

“I’m my own biggest critic. It just happens that some people prefer to talk about the negatives.

“I always have a film playing in my mind. It might be moments from previous games or imagining challenges for the ball. Whatever it is, it helps me concentrate completely on the game.”

While retaining full faith in his own ability, Mustafi has also seen his value to the Arsenal cause talked up by Arsene Wenger.

The long-serving Frenchman remains a big fan of a man he snapped up from Valencia in 2016, and that respect works both ways as an iconic figure at Emirates Stadium prepares to head for the exits.

Mustafi said of Wenger in the wake of the revelation that he is step down at the end of the season: "Arsene Wenger has achieved an unbelievable amount with Arsenal, the club is incredibly grateful.

“Twenty-two years – nowadays in football that’s pretty much unique. An era is ending.

“I’m extremely grateful that he has believed in me and wanted to bring me here. We obviously want to give him the farewell he deserves. Best case scenario: that will include a trophy.”
