Feyenoord came through a match marred by fireworks away to SC Cambuur on Sunday afternoon. The game at Kooi Stadion was temporarily suspended in the first half after a serious fireworks incident caused by the away end. After the restart, Feyenoord stretched their lead to 0-4, let Cambuur hit back to 2-4 after the break, before Gjivai Zechiël made it 2-5 late on with his second goal of the afternoon.
Cambuur started brightly and put Feyenoord under pressure early on. The Rotterdam side gave the ball away too often and struggled to find any rhythm, while the home side produced the first effort on goal without really testing goalkeeper Tjark Ernst.
After around 12 minutes, the mood changed completely. A large amount of fireworks was set off from the Feyenoord section and fired towards the pitch and surrounding stands, prompting referee Danny Makkelie to suspend the match and send the players inside. After consultations with safety officials, police and the mayor, it was decided the game could resume. The away end was not evacuated.
Shortly after play restarted, Feyenoord broke the game open. Mika Mármol sent Zechiël through down the left, after which goalkeeper Thijs Jansen collided with Ayase Ueda. The ball then fell kindly for Zechiël, who slotted home for 0-1. In the 26th minute, Luciano Valente doubled the lead after strong build-up play from Gaoussou Diarra.
From there, Feyenoord took more and more control and kept creating chances. Givairo Read and Tsuyoshi Watanabe both saw efforts kept out by Jansen, but just before half-time the third Rotterdam goal arrived when an effort from Mármol ended up in the net via the Cambuur goalkeeper and was recorded as an own goal. Not long after that, Read was brought down in the penalty area by Ismaël Baouf, after which Ueda fired home from the spot for 0-4.
Following the break, Feyenoord clearly took their foot off the gas and gave Cambuur more space. A header from substitute Nicolas Binder drifted just wide, but in the 70th minute it was still 1-4 when Rafik El Arguioui finished off an attack down the right and beat Ernst. Shortly beforehand, the Rotterdam side had made three substitutions and among others handed left-back Javi López his debut.
Cambuur still refused to give up despite the heavy deficit, and El Arguioui struck again 10 minutes later for 2-4. That put some tension back into the game, while Feyenoord clearly had less control than they did before the break and even wasted a promising counter-attacking situation.
In the 83rd minute, Feyenoord restored their three-goal cushion. Jordan Lotomba drilled a low cross in from the right towards the near post, where Zechiël was alert to tap in and make it 2-5 with his second goal of the afternoon.
Feyenoord still went on to win comfortably and Giovanni van Bronckhorst's side move up to fourth place in the VriendenLoterij Eredivisie. Cambuur are bottom without a point after three matches.
