Fuming Copenhagen manager claims Alejandro Garnacho should have received red card for scuffing penalty spot before Jordan Larsson's last-gasp miss against Man Utd

  • Garnacho scuffed the penalty spot
  • Larsson missed from the spot
  • Copenhagen lost 1-0 to United

WHAT HAPPENED? The Danish side got a golden opportunity to earn a point against the Red Devils after they were awarded a penalty deep into stoppage time. However, Larsson's attempt from 12 yards was kept out by Andre Onana, which ensured Harry Maguire's 72nd-minute header was enough for United to get their first win in this edition of the Champions League. Just before Larsson took his shot, Garnacho was caught roughing up the spot with his boots but did not recieve any punishment, which left Neestrup fuming after the match.

WHAT THEY SAID: “It is up to referees and associations to set limits, all you have to do is give a red card for something like that, then people stop doing it,” Neestrup told Norway'sVG.

THE BIGGER PICTURE: However, Norwegian forward Mohamed Elyounoussi differed in his opinion from Neestrup and found no fault in the actions of Garnacho.

"I didn’t get it right then and there. I don’t know how much that affected the penalty," he said. "Jordan still got a good penalty kick, but it was a good save. It’s cynicism, it’s part of top football, you really just have to learn more from it."

WHAT NEXT? Garnacho will hope to start when United host Manchester City in the first derby encounter between the two rivals in 2023-24 on Sunday afternoon.
