Wrexham compared to Jurgen Klopp's 'mentality monsters' Liverpool as Ryan Reynolds & Rob McElhenney's side prepare for clash with Welsh rivals Newport

Phil Parkinson's troops are already making their fans dream of securing back-to-back promotions after a sensational start in League Two where they have amassed 52 points in 26 matches with 15 wins and seven draws. They can claim pole position on Saturday afternoon if they beat Newport and the opposition coach Graham Coughlan is more than wary of the threat posed by Paul Mullin and Co. which led him to make a comparison with Klopp's marauding Liverpool side who are atop the standings in the English top-flight.

Speaking to reporters, Coughlan said: "Jurgen Klopp uses the term ‘mentality monsters’ and Wrexham are similar. They have got good quality players, they can score in various ways, they are very strong at set pieces, and at times they can win when they don’t have to be pretty while they can also be pretty.

“Wrexham have got a lot in their armoury and are a decent team with the variation of their goals, play and players off the bench. They remind me of the Plymouth team I played in because that was a really strong team full of strong characters led by a great manager. Wrexham are very similar.”

Wrexham could do the league double over Newport after they emerged triumphant at the Racecourse Ground in December after they capitalised on a pair of set pieces through James Jones and Elliot Lee. However, Coughlan warned that they are "more confident" heading into this match as they remain unbeaten in their last four league matches.

"We are going in more confident and in better form than the previous game,” said Coughlan. “One of my issues this season is that I haven’t been able to affect the game with my bench as I would like. At stages this season we have had three or four substitutions [available].

"Our bench this season hasn’t really had the impact this season that it should, and that’s purely down to numbers and injuries. Hopefully, that is behind us and we can have an impact off the bench, just like we did at Doncaster last week. That was the first time I can recall this season when the bench has won the game for us.”

Wrexham have been in sensational form since the turn of the year and have won all three matches in 2024. They will be determined to continue their perfect run at Rodney Parade as a victory will not only get them the bragging rights of the derby but will also crown them as league leaders.
