There is also a buy-back option in Greenwood’s new contract, which could offer him a way back to Old Trafford. The Telegraph claims a retracing of steps remains unlikely, with the chances of United triggering the clause in the winger’s deal “considered very low”.

The Red Devils are more concerned about the sell-on clause that could stand to benefit them considerably in future windows. Greenwood is expected to use Marseille as another stepping stone en route to eventually joining another superpower of European football.
